For a single, consider 'Irish Fireflame' and/or 'Mrs. Oakley Fisher.' Those are real favorites of ours, and IF in particular is intensely fragrant.

If you are interested in Noisettes, you're on a great track for SoCalif.
I LOVE 'Reve d'Or,' a Tea Noisette which is incredibly well suited to SoCal.

and if you want a bush-style Noisette, look for Placerville White Noisette or Blush Noisette.

Almost any Tea is good, but you might like to try Mme. Lambard (Lombard) or Mme. Berkeley for first ones.

I highly recommend Duchesse de Brabant. It's a beautiful bush which seems to bloom constantly and is fragrant. Le Vesuve and Angel's Camp Tea are excellent for rebloom and beautiful. Spice is another tea everyone raves about; it's supposed to be very carefree and blooms constantly. For a single rose I recommend the China Mutabilis, which reblooms constantly and the blooms change color. Very healthy and carefree. Another pretty China is Carnation, pink and with frilly edges. Souvenir d'un Ami is another favorite pink tea of mine, very pretty. Blumenschmidt and Mme. Joseph Schwartz are great white/cream teas, and the latter is fragrant.

I'm so glad you're supporting Vintage. It's a source we really can't afford to lose. Please let us know what choices you've made.

In some parts of Southern California, Duchesse de Brabant can mildew sadly.
It is better at the Stagecoach Inn, in Newbury Park than it was in my
more coastal garden, but even there, it does mildew.

Archduke Joseph (most often sold in the U.S. as Mons. Tillier, seems to be
bulletproof here.
So is Rosette Delizy.

7 miles inland, you should be fine for just about anything. Some of the mentioned roses get very large eventually, so hopefully you have the space.

The Tea roses can be very, very, low maintenance here. Deadhead as you feel like it in passing by just snapping off the flower itself, and let them grow without needing to prune much at all for years.

I would suggest you pot the bands up to 1 gallon and then 2 gallon before putting them in the ground. The bands don't have very much of a root system and getting a 2 gallon pot full of roots first before going in the ground seems to help a lot.

I can say that 'Souvenir de Pierre Notting' has been a non-stop bloomer here. As soon as it reached 12" tall it started blooming and has not quit since. I haven't done anything for it except admire the flowers.

Any smaller OGR roses out there? I understand here in S.Cal everything gets big--my HTs seem to be all tall canes but my yard isn't gigantic. I do have room for 1 more large rose but the rest shouldn't get taller than my 6 ft husband.

Christine -- Many of the Chinas are slower-growing, and thus "smaller" for practical purposes.
And they can be trimmed back some.
I love them in our conditions.

And POLYANTHAS are generally restrained in size, making them perfect for the smaller gardens we see in SoCal.
I don't know why they don't get more exposure, because they are WONDERFUL roses for our area.

The Bourbon, 'Souv de la Malmaison' is a smallish plant, though it is better inland than in cooler coastal areas.

Where in SoCal are you located?????

These are my favorites all grown organically on the coast of CA or northeast S.F. Bay

In Southern California, Ellen Wilmott is a favorite of exhibitors,
But in a no-spray garden in this area, it can be badly troubled by
powdery mildew.

I live in Palms (part of the city of Los Angeles) just east of Venice, CA. I don't have coastal conditions but the marine layer does moderate our temperatures so that it rarely gets above 90 unlike the valleys.

Christine, as far as I have seen, the SoCal exhibitors who excell with Ellen Wilmott spray regularly, and they mostly live somewhat inland.

I tried to grow it here at the coast -- it is gorgeous when it is good -- and it was a mildewy mess.
I have had much better luck here with Irish Fireflame and Mrs. Oakley Fisher.

My solution for mildew is a pan of soapy dishwater which I wash dishes in and then take out and fling on the rose who has it. Organic biodegradable soap. It's not perfect but it is pretty good and I still have that rose.Mrs. Oakley Fisher and Smarty also do well here.

Because you asked for O.G.R.s that are fragrant, easy to grow and have good re-bloom, I've compiled this list, that I've gleaned from observing hundreds of roses that grow in a no-spray garden in Oakland, they all survived 10 years, with no care but being watered, all are lovely.
'Arrilaga' a deeply fragrant Hybrid Perpetual that blooms more often then most of this class. Pink and shapely blooms. Some P.M. near the coast, easily treated with Cornell. Here it makes a compact 4' x c. 4' bush, you might ask Jeri, about its' health and how big it gets in soca.

There are two O.G.R. classes that out-bloom all rose classes on earth:China and Tea. Tea by itself, refers to the Old Garden Rose class that in my opinion is far more beautiful than the modern forms of Hybrid Tea roses.
Tea class roses are often described as being exquisitly delicate in style, and in my eyes, Tea roses possess an elegance that is supreme among roses. My landlady noticed my "Mrs. Dudley Cross' and wondered why it appeared so different from our neighbors H.T.s. Tea roses retain the natural charm of wild roses from which they were bred.
China class rosebushes re-bloom faster than other roses, and most China roses have smaller, less substantial blooms, and are not commonly fragrant.
Teas that are available from vintagegardens, that are no-spray in Oakland, Ca and are well loved by a large percentage of Old Garden Rose lovers, include
'Mme. Berkeley' pronounced Barkley, this rose has lovely substantial blooms that range from yellow and pink in spring, to coral in Autumn, and the foliage is dark green and very attractive, a plus. Tea fragrance.
'Clementina Carbonieri' gorgeous rich pink blend roses.
both are large plants.
One of the most elegant Tea roses is
'Mme. Antoine Mari" cream with light pink edges, one of the smaller Teas that is c. 5'x c. 5' in N. calif.
' White Maman Cochet' is one of the best roses in my garden and the bush form blooms more than the climbing form. White with a pink edge.

Lady Hillingdon is an elegant, foriforous tea. I think the bush version doesn't get very large. Autumn is an early hybrid tea with spectacular coloring.

I have not grown it, but I have been told that Arillaga is a huge thing here.
And I have heard that it can have trouble opening near the coast, when
the weather is cool.
(That seems odd, since it was "born" in Santa Barbara.)
The Cochets -- among my favorite Teas -- can also have difficulty
opening, near the coast. But they're wonderful, inland.
And they are disease-free, once mature, even in our fog belt.
Madame Berkeley is wonderful here. Blooms are quite small in hot weather,
but it is otherwise trouble-free.
Other disease-free Teas:
Rosette Delizy, Marie van Houtte, Mrs. B.R. Cant.
But if you were to grow no other roses, I would urge you to plant
"Grandmother's Hat." (See above)
