This past week I had 18 roses removed with RRD, and it's my own fault. When Josh was over earlier this year he noticed what he thought might be the start of RRD on my Safrano. I just KNEW it had to be from the use of Roundup to remove grass, and promptly forgot about it.

So, I plan to wait a full season, get a good look at the remaining roses next spring, then plant in the fall. Roses that will be replaced are SDLM, Duchesse de Brabant, Cl Pinkie, Maggie, Safrano and R. Moschata. All of the roses from Vintage are still in pots and look good. Hopefully out of all of this I have learned just how large these roses grow here in the Dallas area and plant accordingly. The bed in the picture is just the back bed, side bed looks just as bare!

It's not a positive, but thanks for reporting the R. moschata. I hadn't a report of it getting RRD before.

This year, try to figure out the wind patterns in your garden and where the vector mites may have dropped and how they moved once in your garden. Then design for max air flow.

What you don't want is places where mites drop (the downwind side of solid fences, of dense trees, that sort of thing.

I am sorry. Maybe it will be fun to plan the beds differently like you meant to remove the roses.

I had 2 years old peach tree uprooted by Hurricane Irene and we were out of home at the time. We returned home 3 days later to see the peach laying on its side, with roots exposed. I was so upset, that didn't even come close to look at it. I just asked my husband who had day off next day to dig it up and discard while I am at work... I came home, to see the tree upright and "growing". My hubby, who knows nothing about planting, just straitened the tree up, dug the roots in, hammered 2 inch steel pipe near the tree and tied it to the pipe ... I was thankful, but skeptical. He asked me to give the tree a chance. I agreed. That was not a right season to buy a new one anyway. Guess what? Next year we had peaches. And we are having them every year since. Even after this year harsh winter, there is a reasonable count of green peaches(at least before fungus and OM got to them, but this is not a tree fault). Some time it pays to give a chance)

To determine who is (was) eating your plants, you might try a game camera. They're fairly inexpensive. Motion activated, battery powered, night-vision (sorta -- actually just IR sensitive with an IR illuminator I think), made for outdoor use... jim_1 Zone 5B Illinois: "Urbana" That revives old memories for me. I attended the engineering college there during the years of 1957 - 1960 and graduated with a BSME. The first year there, I lived in the Mens Residnece Hall across the street from the old gymnasium; That's where the state high school basketball playoffs were held.. What a picnic that was. The old gym seated only 5000, not nearly enough for all who wanted to attend, and parking was scarce. There was parking, but it was some distance from the building. At tournament time, the street was blocked with traffic and pedestrians. The new, saucer shaped, auditorium was in the planning stages. It was to be built on the south end of campus.

HI, skell311, It's very gracious of you to shoulder some of the blame, but when you are paying professionals to design a custom home for you (I'm making that assumption here), they should educate you about the various materials available and the pros and cons of each. Selection of exterior materials should be made in the design phase and specified in the approved construction plans.

Oh, how disheartening, Ogrose! I agree with Kippy, try to make it a positive by having a second chance to build up your dream garden from scratch.

That is so terrible for you to lose so much , i wish you could have some of mine that seem to be ok in Idaho so far. I still watch over them expecting someday I might be faced with the same fate.
I was thinking to scale back the roses a bit and choose some other kinds of plants so that if my roses get hit I would not take it so hard. In Spring I want to plant pink flamingo colored huge ruffley poppies on a long stilt stem, and the giant white columbines at the garden center were breathtakingly beautiful.
Over last summer I actually downscaled from 13 roses to just 5 of my favorite, giving my friends what they wanted. As I get older, stiffer and wrinklier every day it reminds me to prioritize what matters most, what I can and can't live without. My son's dear dog Chef was very sick for a few days and then yesterday morning he found old Chef dead. I cried all day yesterday, but today am looking forward to Spring again, planning my garden and a pretty grave for Chef.
That is the great thing about rose gardening, the HOPE.
