wine cups? tell me more. The colour looks like callirhoe. Please don't tell me it is the impossible to grow (for me) prairie gentian, lisianthus. Want Want Want. Oh yes, I love Otto Von Linne - our cat is called Otto so the rose is now known as Otto von Kitty.

I googled callirhoes and yes, the wine cups are one of the callirhoes. I know of two types -- the tall varieties like the one above that grow wild in the Texas hill country and a shorter more ground cover type that grow in the more sandy soil south of San Antonio. The tall ones that I have start blooming early in the spring along with larkspurs. I don't why you couldn't grow them where you are :-)

My guess is Otto Linne, but that's from seeing them in other gardens a while back. Schubert has broader leaflets. Anyway, they are both German dudes and good roses.

Looks like he could use some sulfur and iron.

oh thank you, roselee. I grow callirhoe involucrata (poppy mallow) and fully intend to hunt down seeds for the tall callirhoe. You have made my day as I love to find something new and interesting, so thanks again. Lovely, lovely garden, by the way.

Having grown both in the past, my guess is also that yours is Herr Otto. It's a lighter color than EvS, which has more of a lovely purple color. EvS just didn't bloom enough for me. If it had, I would have preferred it over Otto.

I have both also and while Otto has bloomed much more, the fragrance on EVS is stronger to my nose. I really like them both. That is a beautiful garden.

Michael, you're right. The plant in the picture sure needs some attention. Our water and soil in this part of Texas is extremely alkaline so keeping the soil close to neutral is a constant battle.

Camp, (Suzy if I remember correctly) I collected the seeds for the upright winecups from a roadside where they were blooming. If I can collect some from my plants I'll be sure and let you know. There is a place in Texas that sells them, but don't know if it would be worth it for you to try to order them from across the seas. Here is it just in case:
