Excellenz von Schubert as a small...

climber, around 6' possible in zone 5? I have an area near my cedar fence and was interested to know more about this lovely rose. Does it rebloom well? Rogue Valley Roses described it as nearly thorn less but Help Me Find states it has hooked thorns, which is true? Others considering are Otto Linne, John Davis, Super Dorothy, or Leonardo da Vinci. Want good repeat and healthy foliage! I really want this rose to stand out, since it would be near the gate to the backyard. I had a Zephrine Drouhin there, but it got SP'd because it did not repeat well and the foliage looked bad after the Spring flush. Thanks for any advice!

Regarding Excellenz von Shubert... out of my 500+ different varieties of roses this is one of my favorites. It reblooms for me; it is disease resistant, and it is fragrant. Mine seems to be thornless. The color is beautiful, but, I would not say it is a rose for a "stand out" effect. I think it is one for more subtle charm. Others are sure to disagree with me on this, however.

John Davis does make a serious statement with his first flush, but, I'm not impressed with the rebloom (if that's important to you).

What about Rosarium Ueterson?

I hope that others in your colder zone will offer some suggestions.

EvP is thornless for me, and since I grow it as a perennial rose (dies to the ground each year during the winter) it will never be a climber for me. It's a great plant that is beautiful in all aspects and I love the scent. The only downside is the appetite rabbits have to it. EvP is sought before all other roses for attack. I have to spray it with rabbit repellent every two weeks.

'John Davis' is an excellent repeater in my garden. I would say it is ever-blooming. JD is nearly thornless. No scent for me. Hardy to the tips. The best of the Explorer roses.

Thanks for the input. The trellis is a 4' tall and 8' wide wooden trellis... set on top of the back of a half wine barrel. (Secured, of course, with rebar poles that go into the planting mix). The orientation of the trellis is horizontal, so I can encourage maximum spread on this beautiful rose so I can cover up an ugly-as-sin grey stacking block retaining wall. :-) Yes, Jeri... it's a half wine barrel. (It's on concrete, raised above the ground, and it's on wheels (my own special contraption I build for all my half wine barrels.) I'm stubborn like that. This is all an experiment. If it ends up not working, so be it. I'll have room in front of the container for the shorter canes to come forward, and I am hoping the container restrains the growth a little. But I do expect to be pruning this at some point. I guess what I want to know is when to prune... and does EvS bloom on new wood or old wood? Thanks, -k

Multiflora is highly susceptible to chlorosis, the lack of iron (and sometimes nitrogen). The most common cause here is the alkalinity of our soil and water. If for any reason, the plant was deprived of either of those nutrients, or the temps were just off enough when the bud was formed, it's going to be lighter colored. I frequently had to heavily amend the soil to acidify it to keep my heavily multiflora based roses their right colors. Many other types are also susceptible to the issue. I had chronic chlorosis (and light colored flowers and foliage) on Blue Mist, Reine des Violettes and a number of others for a long time in the old Newhall garden. Now, I just don't grow them if they have the issue. A client has Gartendirektor Otto Linne which FREQUENTLY throws chlorotic canes and nearly white flowers. I told her if it offends her, cut it off. Otherwise, leave it alone and once the appropriate nutrients and temps arrive together, it will green up. Kim

My EvS is in full sun, and alas he does not rebloom very well. He has a stunning spring flush, then nothing til a more modest but still nice fall flush. But boy is he gorgeous! I really love him. I also grow Otto Linne. He reblooms like a champ and is also very pretty - if not quite as stunning as EvS. Im interested to read what Mike says about growing Caldwell as a semi-climber. I grow this rose, too, and absolutely adore it. Mine is in a pretty shady spot, and it just blooms and blooms with never a sign of disease. Oh, and its perfectly hardy here in zone 6. I may take a cutting and see if I can get it to grow as a climber! I think Leonardo would be a lovely choice, he reblooms very well (but note: I think his color is better in a little shade. In full sun, his flowers can brown a bit). I have had John Davis for about 6 years, and only this year is he starting to show recurrent blooming, so lovely as he is (and his spring flush is fantastic) you do have to be patient. I have two Super Dorothys, and they both bloom very consistently and well. I think she is beautiful - all those big sprays of frothy pink flowers! Anyway, good luck with your selection!

FWIW (maybe not much, as I am in the wrong climate zone) I LOVE EvS.

It's is a vigorous climber in Southern CA, and it requires a bit of extra effort
here, because of our alkaline conditions.
But for me, it is 100% worth the effort.
I found it far more vigorous and generous of bloom than Gartendirecktor Otto Linne,
but of course, that could be climate-specific.

I would agree with Robert that it's a beauty, one of my favorites, and also a 'background' rose for me. In our garden it's planted next to Sally Holmes and makes a beautiful combination. I can't imagine mine as a climber with any appeal. I suppose it could be trained to climb, but the canes are stiff and few, so it might work with another rose and perhaps a clematis to fill out the climb and bloom periods. Much better to use it as a shrub, at least at my house.

Thanks for all the responses. Robert it is good to hear it is a FAVORITE and it has a nice fragrance! I was thinking of Rosarium U but like the lilac color of EVS.
Sue I was planning on pairing it with clematis Miss Bateman so I could just use it as a shrub and maybe plant another clematis with Miss Bateman that will flower when it is not.
Jeri I am getting good reviews on Otto, but will check with Northland Rosarium on repeat also before I decide. Nice to hear John Davis is good but prefer a darker pink. Thanks.
