What causes Canker?

I think I have seen canker on a few canes this year but what causes it and how do you prevent it?

How do you tell the difference between canker and just dieback? I thought I had canker in a potted Lilian Austin but I took it to an experienced grower and he said it was dieback.

It is a disease caused by fungus. There is more than one kind of Canker. From MSU website:

"Brand canker develops while plants are under winter
protection. Infected roses have a black sooty appearance
when uncovered in the spring. This disease is sporadic
and does not directly affect the blossoms or leaves.
Destroy infected canes.

Brown canker causes cankers with light chestnut brown
centers and deep purple margins. Small flecks and purple
spots form on the leaves. This disease attacks canes
while the roses are under winter protection. Brown canker
may be worse on bushes hilled with soil.

Common stem canker gains entrance through a wound.
Young cankers are pale yellowish or reddish, becoming
brown, sunken and cracked. Destroy cankered canes. Black
spot sprays usually prevent new infections.

Dieback, cane blight canker causes leaves on the
cane above the canker to wilt, turn brown and die. Destroy the
cankered canes. Sprays for black spot may prevent new
infections."

That's a good link, Hoovb! (Of course, I'm an MSU fan anyway). Here in the north, the whole issue of winterizing and canker is such a conundrum. If we winterize, our roses are more likely to develop canker, and if we don't, our roses are more likely to die or suffer severe winter kill. I mound my roses with the best draining mulch I can find, which helps. I spray them well with dormant oil before mounding them. But canker still rears its ugly head in spring. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to do too much long-term damage, as long as I prune to below the canker (sometimes leaving only a few inches of cane).

In the attached link you can view a picture of the bark with a mottled red and green appearance (whatever the plants have looks a little different from plant to plant . . . perhaps different stages of disease). Unfortunately, Shutterfly doesn't give you an HTML code option. It just gives you an embedded code for Facebook/Blogger (you can get to the embedded code, but it's not in the correct coding string for GardenWeb, which uses basic HTML). I would suggest using Photobucket.com. It is much easier. Once you've uploaded your photos and go back to your album, all you have to do is simply float your mouse over a photo. A code window pops right up. Just left click once in the HTML code window, and it gets copied immediately to your Windows Clipboard. Then, all you need to do is enter another message here, and RIGHT click in the body of the message and select "Paste". The HTML code will then be pasted right into the body of your message. When you then click on "Preview Message", your photo will show up (you'll know you copied the correct code, then.) Very simple :-) Patty S.

I do sterilize with alcohol and wash them with antibacterial soap quite often, and received a new pair of pruners this year, so Im ready to go. I did notice a lot of mushrooms growing wherever I mixed in old potting bark discarded from an orchid farm. is that a possibility?

That's the thing about rot in trees-it does not indicate a lack of health at all. Trees could be thought of as cones, a new cone growing over the top of the old one each growing season (under the bark). As such, what happens on the inside, the old heartwood, is of little consequence to tree health. I'm sure we've all seen hollow trees that leaf out beautifully, year after year. I'm not going to blast the suggestion of such items as orange oil for use a s a wound dressing in trees, simply because there always exists the possibility that a new technique will come along that holds promise. But I will say, if trees evolved in such a manner that, when a branch was shed, whether by wind, mechanical injury, normal senescence, herbivory by some critter, they needed human intervention......well, to put it very simply, they would NOT have evolved. I think that limbs on that maple were removed by previous owners who had no knowledge of proper technique. The branch collar was cut into/removed entirely, or so it looks to my eyes, and at each point where this occurred is now a pocket of decay right down through the center of where that branch used to be. It happens all the time. That's one type of injury for which the tree cannot do much, the spread of decay though the vertical dimension being the most difficult for it to wall off, which BTW is precisely why so many hollow trees exist. +oM

Often the fungus enters through a wound in the bark. It requires dampness and cool to moderate temperatures. Lesions sometimes grow aggressively when the plant is dormant or semi-dormant, because active plants seem to have the ability to isolate and stop it growing. You see this on pruning stubs where the stub cankers but it doesn't spread much into the live cane.

Botrytis canker or cane blight could be added to the list. It is black with a purple leading edge.

I always soak my roses and beds with Manzate before I cover for the winter.
