What is the best rose you've bought from Pickering?

I'm thinking of making an order from Pickering and just too many to choose from and have seen few of these roses in person and hate to choose from a description and a photo. So any roses you've had experience with that you love and would buy again would be great.

Looking for disease resistance #1, fragrance #2, vigor and rebloom #3.

It isn't great with 1 & 2, but the polyantha Baby Faurax is my fave. Very vigorous, good rebloom (best when deadheaded). Pickering also has White Pet. I bought mine from another source, but this ia a great little rose. Very vigorous, and covered with blooms.

Of the ones I remember buying from Pickering, I love my Elina (pastel yellow/white) and Peter Mayle (hot pink and big fat blooms). Elina is quite floriferous but is very big and thorny. Put her more in the background where she can't attack human beings but just look lovely.

Peter is an absolute show-off with his hot pink color, but isn't as quick on the re-bloom as I would wish--and I wish he could be a bit more resistant to BS, although he is not a disease-magnet. His blooms are just gorgeous!

I would replace either one if something happened to them.

I don't think I'll admit to a total number for a given year, but I will say that I bought and planted over 100 full-sized rose bushes from Cliff last year when he sadly had to close down Eurodesert. And these weren't any little band-sized roses, these were each shipped individually in huge boxes, some with with root balls bigger than I could reach around. Often I had to drag those puppies individually around my yard to get them to where they were planted, and this went on all summer as Cliff kept reposting those wonderful and hard-to-find roses. By mid-August, I flopped myself down in the middle of my yard and literally lay on my back moaning in misery from all the planting, vowing I would absolutely not order any more of Cliff's roses, no matter how tempting. I even emailed him to that effect and it worked - I only ordered 8 more after that (smile). In case you're wondering what bank I have to rob to afford these roses, I actually get to budget rose purchases from some extra consulting work I do now and then. My DH and I agree that our main family expenses are covered by our regular salaries, so if I take on extra work, it's "fun money", and what is more fun than roses? It took a couple of consults over the winter to pay for my five (and counting) Vintage orders, trying to hope against hope that they can stay in business, but it's well worth it! Oh, Desertgarden, the Summer Uglies are here as well, and I share your pain. That flush of May sweetness has passed. June's miserable trifecta of high heat, blasting wind and unrelieved sun has yet to be buffered by the afternoon thunderstorms of monsoon season. At least we are getting some afternoon clouds now that July has arrived. This year, I've been seeing what the garden will look like without deadheading the perennials, as Piet Oudolf would do. At least that's my excuse. I'm not sure that I like it, but it sure satisfies my lazy bone. I'm mostly in awe of photos of other people's roses (that Laguna! that Purple Lodge! that Sharifa Asma!), but the topic of this thread is what roses I'm most in awe of that *I have*. Tied for second place are Bishop's Castle and Munstead Wood. Bishop's Castle for vigorous growth and production of vast numbers of fragrant flowers. It gets a second place standing since once the heat arrives, all growth and bloom ceases. Munstead Wood for continuous growth and flower production. It gets a second place standing because flower form turns semi-double and size diminishes greatly, also because unlike other descriptions, it has barely any fragrance in my garden. But what I am most in "awe" of right now, is Bolero. After years of complaining about this rose, I discovered that my problem with it wasn't the rose, it was simply a faulty watering system. Now that I've corrected it (oh, my aching back), Bolero simply shrugs off 90-100F heat, and continues to grow and bloom, producing flowers of consistent beauty and fragrance on a compact plant. As Hoovb has mentioned, it outperforms any other white rose that I have, including Iceberg. Indeed, it is outperforming almost any other rose that I have, with Marie Pavie being the only competition in terms of production (great in production and fragrance but far down in the "awe" factor in bloom form, color, leaf form and bush). And to think, I was just a hair's breadth from removing all of my Bolero's due to "poor performance." Hopefully there will be more competition next year, once my new roses grow in. Here it is today, after temps in the upper 90's. It's supposed to be 101F today.

Does free count? I’ve worked at two nurseries. The first one, my boss sent me home with a small car load because they all looked ratty from the previous season. The roses went home with me otherwise they would have ended up in the dumpster. I only kept Bewitched and 2 coffee bean roses From that bunch. I gave the others away to the pizza guy and the neighbors. The second and current nursery allowed me to pick out a number or roses at the end of the season some Austin’s, Soul sister, dark desire, honey perfum, and a few others. I’m not sure how they do in my garden because this will be their first spring in my yard I can’t waiT to see some blooms. I think the cheapest I’ve ever paid for a bareroot rose is probably about Three bucks, but sharing cuttings of old roses and digging up unwanted ones have been the best deals for me.. Though I’m about out of room. Mmmm doesn't help I also have seedlings , less and less space not to mention my husbands rose project. It’s a bit horderish at my house.... there are lots of roses in pots....

Nothing major. I’ve pretty much skipped using coupons or grocery saving apps for now. No stopping at drug stores or anything other than groceries about every week-9 days I go in the store and get out-no loitering. Tomorrow I’m trying contactless Walmart grocery pick up. They put it in your trunk-you stay in the car. No fee or upcharges and it says employees can’t be tipped but appreciate good service marks on a following survey. Our state is going to a phase one of easing the lockdown on Monday. The news keeps saying there will be a second wave of covid in the fall. If that happens, I will only do the grocery pickup if I like it over paying Walmart. com had a big 34oz hand sanitizer for under $4. I paid $6 shipping on it. not sorry-I can refill the pumps in the car when they run low. There’s never any sanitizers in the store

Definitely Austin's Tamora, a wonderful rose, that's been in constant bloom since early June. It's lovely, smells good (to me), vigorous, and seems very healthy--but we don't have blackspot here, so I'll let others comment on that. I'd certainly buy Tamora again. Note resemblance of Tamora to Evelyn, it's offspring. Diane

Diane, that Baby Faurax is a pretty color. White Pet, would you call it a groundcover rose?

Kate, I see Elina has some positive comments on their site too. They donÃ¢ÂÂt seem to offer Peter Mayle any more. I did look up a photo though, very pretty bloom and color.

Nanadoll, That is a very pretty bloom. I love the button centers. We do have blackspot here unfortunately. IÃ¢ÂÂve had Ã¢ÂÂGolden CelebrationÃ¢ÂÂ from Austin and had some foliar issues that are difficult to resolve when you are growing organically. So I am on the fence about whether to try another Austin. I do love their forms and fragrance. I did look up Ã¢ÂÂTamoraÃ¢ÂÂ on Pickerings site and see lots of great comments about her, but one grower said definitely BS and PM susceptible and definitely needs spraying.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with your purchases from Pickering. I think my Ã¢ÂÂno sprayÃ¢ÂÂ garden is going to require me to carefully go through their catalog. Thanks!

No, White Pet isn't a ground cover, but it is short. Mine gets to 3' without pruning, but is perfectly happy kept at 2'.

I was also thinking about Sweet Chariot. I know it is fragrant, and a great bloomer, but I don't know about disease resistance.

If you like pink roses, my favorite from Pickering is Savoy Hotel.
