How's Maman Cochet in the Humid South?

Wondering about this beautiful tea rose that Chamblees nursery offers for sale. I have read it takes time to establish but does well in the Southwest. I'm concerned it may ball in damp weather, spot in rain, etc.

Does anyone from the Gulf Coast area grow this one? How does it handle OUR kind of weather? I'm considering it vs. Jardins de Bagatelle. They don't really look the same but are both blended shades of cream and pink. Thanks.

Well, in the Gulf Coast I'm not, but is the Space Coast okay? :) Maman Cochet has been in my garden for a year and a half, ownroots from Chamblees. It's done very well. The flowers are breathtaking, I love the form and how it just keeps unfurling! It will ball some when it rains, but not enough to bother me. I spray my garden for blackspot so my specimen is clean, but I have the feeling it's probably a lot more resistant than many modern HTs. Fragrance--I don't smell tea-scent very well, so to me it's scentless. Still, the color and form make it a keeper.

I'm not as humid as you, but just wanted to say that in my garden, Maman Cochet did not take very long at all to become established. She was a very vigorous grower. In fact, that is the only reason I no longer have MC ... she got too big too fast. It was my loss, because her blooms were stunning. I detected no fragrance.

'Mme. Berkeley' is one of my five favorite Tea roses, among c. 200 of that class. I love its' shapely blooms, which are medium sized and have those starry pointed edges I love so much. The color varies from a medium rich pink, with salmon and apricot hues, to buff yellow with light pink in our cool climate coastal region. I also grow white 'Maman Cochet' and love its' elegant blooms, which last longer in the vase than a dozen other Tea roses, which I believe may be due to its thicker petal substance. The bush form re-blooms quite a bit faster than the climbing form. Both are healthy plants in my organic rose garden, where temperatures are more often in the 80's than 90's during the bloom season. My neighbor has espaliered her 'Maman Cochet' to a wonderful effect, and I confess I visit her rose more often than her. Lux

Rugosas for the south?

I've had 4 Rugosa alba for almost five years, a Purple Pavement (3 years), a Therese Bugnet seedling (2 years), Sir Robert Lipton (3 years), and 3 Hansa (purchased last fall) and they have performed beautifully. I have also seen Rugosa rubra, Belle Pointevine, and Frau Dagmar Hastrup do very well in the piedmont of NC. I saved a print-out of an old thread about growing rugosas in hot, humid climates -- Phillip_in_Albama (North Alabama) said that Hansa, the Grootendorst series, Belle Pointevine, Sir Robert Lipton, and Sarah Van Fleet had all done well for him. Maryhelen near Gainesville, Florida wrote that she had Rugelda and Mary Manners and they were very healthy. They may have been grafted as Sherry said. The rugosas listed above can handle hot weather as long as they get decent drainage.

bart - to answer your question about my Niles Cochet (which I believe is a color sport of MC), what I meant by "a little balling in the Spring" (sorry I was not more clear) was that, if our Spring (which here is Feb - May) is damp or drizzly for several days, or rainy, NC does ball. However, mostly our Springs are very clear and dry after March, so she does not ball then. So, it all depends on the weather. When she does ball, I usually just cut off the offending blooms, and then when the weather clears up she puts out more flowers. She repeats a lot during our hot dry summers, and then there is no problem with balling. The Fall flush is also usually fine. In case the info is of any use, my plant of NC is a rooted cutting off a bush growing a block away from my house which is in the neglected old garden of a cottage which is over 100 years old, and was owned by the same family for 90+ years. The old garden is full of old roses - I noticed banksia lutea, Belle Portugaise, some sort of china, and of course Cecile Brunner, in addition to the very large mature bush of NC. About 15 years ago the very elderly man of the original family, who still owned the cottage, knocked on my front door wanting to know if my FIL still lived there - he used to play with him when they were children around 1920! Ok I just placed my order with Antique Rose Emporium for Mrs. Dudley Cross and Belinda’s Blush. Free shipping today :-) I don’t have a whole lot of space and these seemed the smaller of the choices. I also threw in Marie Daley, Valentine, and Lady of Shallot (I loved the apricot color of my super thorny, super disease resistant Garden Sun with gorgeous foliage that was ripped out during yard remodel and LoS seems to be a similar color, I hated the thorns on GS and won’t miss it). Since everything in my yard is new I am trying to get a mix of different roses that should be OK here to see what does best in my climate. So far this fall I will have newly planted 17 roses— 4 Austins, Darcey Bussell, Golden Celebration, James Galway, Lady of Shalott; 1 Bourbon, Gruss an Tepliz; 3 Hybrid Musks, Cornelia, Excellenz von Schubert, Lyda Rose; 2 Noisettes, Madame Alfred Carriere, Reve d’Or (noisette-tea); 3 Polyanthas, Climbing Pinkie, Marie Daly, Perle d’Or; 1 Tea Mrs Dudley Cross; and 3 unknowns/found, Belinda’s Blush, Peggy Martin, Valentine. Maybe I still need one China, Elizabeth’s China or Spice.

Thanks, guys. It sounds from Elaine like rain may be a little bit damaging but humidity's not a problem. That's good. The lack of fragrance part doesn't sound so appealing, though. I certainly grow roses that aren't fragrant, but fragrance is a definite trait I prefer. hmm... any other observations, anyone?

I have Niles Cochet, a sport of Maman Cochet, and the blooms on this tiny baby plant are stunning. I brought some of the blooms in and floated them in a bowl of water. (I didn't want to cut much stem on a baby plant). They gave me immense pleasure looking at them.

I am going to get Maman Cochet and find a place for her. The blooms are that gorgeous. I think you'd be missing out on something if you didn't get Maman, or at least one of her sports.

I purchased a Niles Cochet which I think I have lost to the drought...but...

everyone told me to expect the entire spring flush to ball on any rose in the Cochet family. I didn't know this before I got Niles and since he is new I cannot confirm....but I must say that it did break my heart to learn this. We have JB here and although they are not as bad as some regions, I really want a good spring show to make up for the next months of JB damage.

You should look to others to confirm, but I thought I should let you know....

I live in about as humid a climate as it can get, and I've had no balling on Niles Cochet so far.
