SoCal Rose growers, rose on this arbor?

Hi all,

I have posted some photos on the Gallery of an arbor I had previously reserved for annual vines like morning glories, but I have been looking at photos of your gardens. Now I need a rose there. If you have time, will you please click on over there and give me your opinions?

I want Eden Rose. Should I have her?

The two roses that do best in this area of my garden are St. Patrick and Henry Fonda.

It is very hot there with no shade at all.

Where are you located Renee?
If you're away from the coast Eden Rose may do well for you.

But before you make a decision, I wish you would look at Fourth Of July.
It's good almost anywhere -- but GREAT in Southern California.
And it is a rose hybridized as a climber, which will bloom continuously.

Hi Jerijen,
I live in Simi Valley on the NE valley floor.
When I first saw Fourth of July, I thought it could not possibly be easy to grow a rose this dramatic. Thanks for letting me know about it!

Graham is better own-root in So Cal. Grafted on Dr. Huey he gets really large and doesn't bloom that much. Own-root he's a nice-rounded shrub with regular repeat. You are in zone 24, close to the ocean? Eden will likely never open for you. Also a rust magnet. Beautiful beautiful flower when it is good, but many drawbacks. Colette is very nice, might open better for you, and less Rust. I'd go with Darcy or Jude. Mary Rose is a mildewer par excellence, and there are many other pink Austins with faster repeat for So Cal.

Arbor: Mix of rose/grapes/jasmine anyone?

Do you mean pergola or arbor (latter is simply an arch, the former is like an open roof over a walkway). I inherited a pergola (we called it the 'grape arbor' not knowing the difference) in SoCal for many years with Concord grapes. It was beautiful and the did very well. It originally had jasmine on it and a climbing rose so a few thoughts: 1) Pick what you want the most grapes or flowers. 2) They will intermingle unless if you're talking about a pergola and have them on opposite long ends. If you want grapes, the jasmine and roses (with thorns!) will make harvesting annoying and/or painful. 3) If you are talking arbor, I'd stick with roses and be done. Pick a disease resistant (mildew/rust) rose and it will be nearly every blooming and hopefully smelly which will make the cleanup not a chore. 4) Jasmine looks pretty in someone else's yard but is not without a lot of work as well. The leaves collect dust and dirt, the flowers forever need cleanup and it needs regular pruning to keep it manicured - even more regular if you start using hedge clippers. Also, when it gets older, it is very woody and heavy. And, if you're allergic, you won't enjoy the scent. I would never have it again.

We have done this on several occasions, and it's never been a problem. If your roses have been in place for 8-9 years, and you are in a mild-climate zone, they should probably be self-supporting. (On more than one occasion, our roses have been holding up the arbor.) Just break the arbor apart more or less in place, and pull it out from under. If the plants are not perfectly self-supporting, stick a post in the ground, and loosely tie the plants to that, for temporary support. You shouldn't have any problem at all. Secret Garden Musk climber Reve d' Or *** Either Should do what you want admirably. Grandmother's Hat *** This is more a bush than a climber, tho it can be espaliered on a fence or trellis. But it will be a LOW climber. Barely filling that area. More for your smaller space. OTOH, it will be dependably free of disease, and will bloom almost continuously, if deadheaded. Candidates for my smaller space - a 7' trellis by 8-10' wide area facing east with 3'4 day full sun: Cornelia Blush Noisette *** For us, this was a bush. If you want a real climber, you need Setzer Noisette. OTOH, either of them MUST be deadheaded, or the blooms will turn brown and linger forever. Pinkie? - maybe too big? Climbing Rainbow's End Red Robin *** You mean "Ragged Robin," or 'Gloire des Rosomanes', right? It will definitely do this, and will do you proud. I can't think of a finer SoCal rose. Seriously. I've had a Joseph's Coat climber before but when it got big & thorny the pruning and dead heading was WOW! Candidates for my big space along a 4 ft. high wall by 20 ft. fence (it can have spaced trellises if necessary - faces south, sun pretty much all day): Old Blush *** Cl. Old Blush? LOVELY rose. It will mildew all year here. Ghislaine de Feligonde Jaune Desprez (can fall over?) *** Wants heat to bloom. I finally got one to grow, but -- three blooms a year? Really? 2 Rev d' Or *** Superb choice. 2 Mutabilis? *** VERY BIG SHRUB. Does not climb for us, and I've never seen it used that way. I read differing opinions on mildew concerning MAC (Madame Alfred Carriere), *** MAC will, as Kim notes, mildew at a low level ALL the time. Lamarque is far superior in this climate. FAR superior. And Sombreuil does not ball in my (Camarillo) conditions, or suffer from Botrytis, and I have grown it for almost 24 years. It can occasionally be touched by infinitesimal amounts of mildew, but that's so rare it's not worth talking about. Renee, I haven't seen it in Simi, but I have seen it putting on a show in Thousand
Oaks -- East Thousand Oaks, just off the Norwegian Grade.
You should do fine with it.

I'm in Camarillo, so I look for lower petal counts, else I have roses that don't open.
But Fourth Of July is a very dependable Ventura County rose.

You will also find the website of the Ventura County Rose Society helpful to you.

Hi Jerijen,

I have looked at the VCRS site. I also got some good advice from Otto and Sons in Fillmore. I guess if a rose can stand the heat in Fillmore, it will grow here!

I am more to the north, close to the San Fernando Valley. My neighborhood is a strange little rural pocket just north of the 118 near Tapo Canyon. Are you in the Heights?

I didn't know that roses with many petals did not open well. So much to learn.

I am a bit embarrassed to say that I am still enchanted by red roses with white baby's breath. I grow little white daisies with Showbiz roses in one bed. Wouldn't it be spectacular to grow Fourth of July on the fence behind that bed?

Any pink climbers that might not grow too big that you would recommend for this climate? I fear New Dawn might be too dense for that arbor.

I know your area well.

No, we're not in the Heights. That's the ritzy part of Camarillo.
We're in what was once called "Avocado Acres." Other end of the hill -- and
of the income scale. :-)

YOU probably don't have to worry about roses opening. Your area is as much as
ten degrees warmer than ours.

You don't want New Dawn!
It's a fine rose, but NOT a good rose for this area!
Pink Climber?
Look up Berries 'n Cream -- pink and white stripes. It should be excellent for you.
And it is disease-free.
Ask at the VCRS Web Site for other suggestions. I'm more of an Old Rose person,
so I don't always keep up with new. :-)
