Do you mean pergola or arbor (latter is simply an arch, the former is like an open roof over a walkway). I inherited a pergola (we called it the 'grape arbor' not knowing the difference) in SoCal for many years with Concord grapes. It was beautiful and the did very well.

It originally had jasmine on it and a climbing rose so a few thoughts:

1) Pick what you want the most grapes or flowers.

2) They will intermingle unless if you're talking about a pergola and have them on opposite long ends. If you want grapes, the jasmine and roses (with thorns!) will make harvesting annoying and/or painful.

3) If you are talking arbor, I'd stick with roses and be done. Pick a disease resistant (mildew/rust) rose and it will be nearly every blooming and hopefully smelly which will make the cleanup not a chore.

4) Jasmine looks pretty in someone else's yard but is not without a lot of work as well. The leaves collect dust and dirt, the flowers forever need cleanup and it needs regular pruning to keep it manicured - even more regular if you start using hedge clippers. Also, when it gets older, it is very woody and heavy. And, if you're allergic, you won't enjoy the scent. I would never have it again.

JBs like grapes better than roses. Scuppernong or Muscadine grape vines get fair sized as far as I recall. I have never grown them, being happy with St Pippin & Svenson's Red for my freezy bird zone.

My grapes work as a great target plants for the JBs. Do you have JBs in FL?

The problem is that grape vines like to hog the sun and constantly have to be kept in line letting sunshine, when there is any, get to the roses.

I envy your ability to grow Jasmine. How cool!

I mean an arbor, not a pergola. I figured that idea was going to take alot of effort to keep pretty. I have Red Eden climber for one side and we were trying to decide what to pair it up with; hence the idea of jasmine or grapes. I am thinking of just pairing it up with Sombreuil. Or perhaps just using grapes and putting Red eden elsewhere... I don't know! The right answer will come hopefully!

Either way, I vote again for roses which will have leaves not to mention flowers most all year. Grapes will lose their leaves in the fall and not leaf out again until spring regardless of zone. If you would like grapes, they are easy enough to trellis along a fence out of the way. Out of the way is good as they also make a big mess when the grapes ripen, the birds and ants get after the fruit, etc. especially if you need a ladder to harvest.

no no - you will be overwhelmed. All of these are vigorous, leafy and rampageous. Just have one or another. Honestly, all together will be a terrible difficult mishmash.
Jasmine is hugely foliated and grapes need very careful pruning at a specific time of year. Roses, on the other hand, are forgiving, longlasting, and will not cause your arbour to collapse under the sheer weight of growth.

I am in zone 10 California. I decided against the mixing of the jasmine and/or grapes. I am sticking with roses only. I have red eden climber and I just bought sombreuil to mix with it. Hopefully they will look as beautiful together as I imagine!!! Thank you all for the input.
