water right before sunrise. shear the lavenders into globes, taking care not to cut back to dead wood. Take off 1-2". azaleas have small, shallow root systems, so lightly but frequently is the best way to water. They do not like to dry out. You could try some fertilizer, but lightly. Those small, shallow root systems are sensitive. . Iceberg I do 3x / week mid spring to the beginning of December. 90'sF every other day, 100sF every day. Normal winters I shut off my irrigation. This year 2x per week, just enough. Probably will step it up to 3x in a couple of weeks. A gallon or two at a time is good depending on the size of the plants. Adjust by observing the plants. Do they look good? Are they holding on to their foliage? Are they reblooming well? Mulch will hold in moisture, keep the soil cooler (rose roots like cool soil) and break down into nutrients that enrich the soil. Keep mulch away from the base of the rose by 3"-6"

Hi Beth - I'm new to this forum, but not new to coastal Southern Cal rose growing, so I'll chime in too. I'm in San Juan Capistrano on the South end of Orange County and about 2.5 miles from the beach in a coastal canyon. So I know all about roses in the marine layer fog. Mildew, not black spot, is the bane of our existence here. The only blackspot I've ever seen in my garden was on florist roses. But I do spray. And the three most fragrant ones on your list -- Double Delight, McCartney Rose and Fragrant Cloud -- will mildew even with religious spraying. But, the fragrance is worth it and I grow all three. No one has told you about the rose societies here yet. There are several. I go all the way south to the California Coastal Rose Society in Carlsbad. That's probably too far for you. There are two other OC rose societies -- the Orange County Rose Society which meets very near to Huntington Beach in Westminster -- they focus on exhibitions and hold their show the last weekend of October every year at Rogers Gardens. There's also another one that focuses mostly on gardening, garden tours and garden parties -- no exhibiting -- which is the Saddleback Rose Society -- that one's a bit inland for both of us. Wholly different climate those folks have. You can get to either one by googling the names, or I've put a link in here for the OCRS. On the rest of your list, I've grown most of them, and they do just fine. But as a general rule, in coastal cool areas like ours, fewer petals is better. Many roses just won't open like they do in hot climes, and sometimes you just die waiting for a leeeetle bit of heat to get them open, which never comes. So, plan to have some that open without heat. As for colors, try these -- Pink -- Our Lady Of Guadalupe is by far the best pink floribunda. But also check out The Imposter and Lovestruck, both of which do well for me. For Hybrid Teas, I like Memorial Day. Purple -- Intrigue is okay, but try Purple Tiger -- it's better and it's striped. It does really well on the coast. For a Hybrid Tea, I like Neptune and one that Armstrongs carries called Della Reese that is a darker purple hybrid tea with occasional exhibition form. Orange -- About Face Red -- I'm still looking for a good one. Yellow -- Julia Child or Midas Touch. Or even Peace, which gets enormous blooms on the coast. Multi -- get some stripes -- City of Carlsbad if you can find it or Cabana if you can't. Have fun. I seem to move every few years just BECAUSE I get to replenish my garden. Enjoy it. Secret Garden Musk climber Reve d' Or *** Either Should do what you want admirably. Grandmother's Hat *** This is more a bush than a climber, tho it can be espaliered on a fence or trellis. But it will be a LOW climber. Barely filling that area. More for your smaller space. OTOH, it will be dependably free of disease, and will bloom almost continuously, if deadheaded. Candidates for my smaller space - a 7' trellis by 8-10' wide area facing east with 3'4 day full sun: Cornelia Blush Noisette *** For us, this was a bush. If you want a real climber, you need Setzer Noisette. OTOH, either of them MUST be deadheaded, or the blooms will turn brown and linger forever. Pinkie? - maybe too big? Climbing Rainbow's End Red Robin *** You mean "Ragged Robin," or 'Gloire des Rosomanes', right? It will definitely do this, and will do you proud. I can't think of a finer SoCal rose. Seriously. I've had a Joseph's Coat climber before but when it got big & thorny the pruning and dead heading was WOW! Candidates for my big space along a 4 ft. high wall by 20 ft. fence (it can have spaced trellises if necessary - faces south, sun pretty much all day): Old Blush *** Cl. Old Blush? LOVELY rose. It will mildew all year here. Ghislaine de Feligonde Jaune Desprez (can fall over?) *** Wants heat to bloom. I finally got one to grow, but -- three blooms a year? Really? 2 Rev d' Or *** Superb choice. 2 Mutabilis? *** VERY BIG SHRUB. Does not climb for us, and I've never seen it used that way. I read differing opinions on mildew concerning MAC (Madame Alfred Carriere), *** MAC will, as Kim notes, mildew at a low level ALL the time. Lamarque is far superior in this climate. FAR superior. And Sombreuil does not ball in my (Camarillo) conditions, or suffer from Botrytis, and I have grown it for almost 24 years. It can occasionally be touched by infinitesimal amounts of mildew, but that's so rare it's not worth talking about. Punk, I did notice the additional colors on the leaves--that really ties the color of the lettering into the whole of the picture doesn't it? You really do have the knack for doing beautiful leaves, and the extra floats of color make them even more pretty. When I started trying to learn some One Stroke painting, one of the things that I thought was so neat was how DD used her "dirty" brush to paint the leaves and it just added such neat extra colors to it. Prior to that, I never would have even considered not washing the color out of my brush completely before using the next color! LOL Anj nailed it, the background does remind me of a beautiful starry night. Nice that you can combine patterns so easily to get exactly what you want. Were the roses from a pattern, or have you just learned to do them so well that you can just do your own thing when you paint them? I don't think I'll ever get away from needing a pattern, or at least a picture, I just have no design talent at all! LOL This forum does really help for motivation, especially now that I don't have any painting buddies in real life. Seeing everyone's projects on here makes me want to do some of my own. Can't wait to see what comes next. Luvs
