Pink Cl Maman Cochet is always droopy and ages to brown paper
Comments (21)laurali; My neighbors cl. "Maman Cochet" does the same thing your plant does, -produces outward facing blooms that turn brown. However this only occurs in summer, when higher heat causes smaller blooms, which is not unusual. Those smaller rose blossoms are lighter in weight and lack enough weight to cause the pedicle to nod downwards from gravity. This is why, I believe, the smaller roses face outwards. The browning is also, I think, probably caused by hot temperatures and the fact her cl. Maman Cochet is in full sun in a southern exposure. I noticed her roses turn brown first on the edges of the petals, which leads me to think these smaller roses are dehydrating more quickly. Her garden is only 3 blocks away from mine, where my white "Maman Cochet" , which is growing in half a days shade, watered well, produces large blooms that nod perfectly and the petals drop off cleanly with no browning. Comments (9)Maman Cochet and all her gang are among my favorite roses; bulletproof to grow and blooms to die for. In addition to the bush forms, I have 2 climbing forms: Maman Cochet and Cl White Maman Cochet. Both are great and when they bloom, those gorgeous blooms hanging from my pergola, well, it just doesnt' get any better. I also really really like Niles Cochet; great rose....See MoreID Tea Rose (Maman Cochet Rouge???)
Comments (2)It looks very much like the tea rose William R. Smith (1909), which I grow. One of its other names is "Blush Maman Cochet." Mine has very little scent, but my nose doesn't smell the tea fragrance very well. It grows tall and wide in my garden. There are more photos on the website I've linked to, some showing the yellowish center. Here is a link that might be useful: Wm. R. Smith on helpmefind...See MoreMaman Cochet-how bad does it ball?
Comments (10)Let me explain. My climate is warm to cool from fall to spring when it usually is quite humid (65 to 95% relative humidity depending on weather and time of day). It is warm to hot in the summer (middle of June to end of September) when air humidity is usually low. MC balls all the time from fall to spring while it doesn't in the summer. The problem is it doesn't bloom much during the summer and what blooms I get are small and insignificant. Best blooms are during the cooler seasons but then they mostly ball... In the rare instances when we get some cool and dry weather then its blooms are very nice. But it's rare in my climate. No need for rain, of which we get very little, to ruin MC's blooms. Air humidity and night dew is enough. I guess that in a cool winter desert climate things will be different. My only rose which balls more than MC is Tipsy. But Tipsy blooms nicely during the warmer drier season.....See Morenanito
