Crown Princess Margareta, will she work in my spot?

I need a center piece, one larger rose (or some plant). It will be planted in the center & surrounded by smaller roses, the smaller roses surrounded by other plants, etc. like a Disneyland rose or something of that size.

The plant in the center MUST be awesome & bloom most the year. It will be in full sun & get plenty of water. I need the size to be 6-8' tall & must take the heat of Sacramento.

Is this the right rose? Any other suggestions?

In hot Sacramento summers, most Austins are going to shut down until it cools off.

I'd look at 'Belinda's Dream', which is very reliable, or some of the classic old garden Teas such as 'Mrs. B. R. Cant', also very reliable rebloom (given sufficient summer water), with much better-than-average disease resistance.

Crown Princess Margareta is a stingy bloomer here. Not one I would ever plant again if I moved. I might go for Perdita in a place like that.

Beautiful rose. My Austins are all quite new and I didn't get much in the way of disease. Margaret Merrill and the Faun were the black spotted ones for me last year. I sprayed a little neem oil on everything last year. One of my baby apple trees had a terrible fungus all summer and didn't bear any fruit even though it flowered well.

Wow, just goes to show you what a little (OK a lot) of snow cover can make in a rose and how it grows. Rebecca is a zone colder than I am, but my CPM fits quite comfortably wound around an obelisk the size of the one on the right above, and its canes are ridiculously floppy to the point of lying on the ground as their only option if I don't wind them around something. That's because my CPM gets little to no consistent snow cover and is pruned to the ground each spring, so it's always regrowing new cane and that's always flexible for me. It also means my CPM almost never blooms though it regrows pretty rapidly in the summer, since mine only blooms on old wood growth. OTOH, my Cinderella FT grows in the form Rebecca showed for her CPM and the canes are so stiff I can't picture winding them around anything. My Cinderella can only dream of blooming as well as Rebecca's CPM picture though, since I find mine is among the less hardy Kordes roses I have - it survives fine but loses a majority of its canes over the winter. And yes, it's snowing today too after being 63 yesterday and there's more snow due this weekend. NOT FAIR. Sometimes we're flirting with being done with frost by mid-April but that is soooo not happening this year. I just barely sneaked out to get the peas and lettuce and such planted yesterday, and that's weeks later than I'd usually do so. Grump. I want spring. I had to break the ice in the water where my bare root roses were soaking and that does not make for a happy rose gardener (the roses BTW were fine under the layer of ice). Cynthia

Your Desdemona was mislabelled?! What is she then?! Now I feel great I didn't go get your Margareta yesterday, even though it was very tempting :-) I don't think I saw Golden Celebration at Dearborn. They have the poet's wife, Graham Thomas, and a couple of TGs in the yellow hue. Baker nursery was closed for good (bad). In my failing attempt to find Jude the Obscure several weeks ago, I drove to the address listed for Corner Copia Farm Market , but ended up in a field. I then called and was told they weren't there for four years! I went to Williams Nursery in Westfield last Thursday, and found they only had three or four pots left. They also raised their price to $49. I was so disappointed that I didn't pay attention to the names. You may call them and ask. They do pick up their phone and check stock for you based on color. Good luck! PS. I am new to gardening too. but I think you should be able to plant one rose for now. I planted TG on one side of my trellis, with Eden on another. Now I wish I had put a clematis on the other side or even morning glory, as Clematis will grow faster so I don't have to wait several years for my trellis to be filled.

I have both CPM and TG, both in the ground for three years now. How much sun does the east side of your house get? I have TG on the east side of mine, and that's maybe 4 hours of morning sun tops due to two massive trees. She hasn't grown a lot but she has been fairly hardy and disease resistant. I've gotten very little rebloom from her but she's notoriously slow about that, so I can't say if it's shade/water or if she's still gearing up. I'm wondering now if she's getting enough water there, based on what others in this thread say. She might get moved next year. CPM I had in a spot much like StrawChicago - clay soil, 4 hours of afternoon sun. Mine was under the canopy of a massive oak tree, and that soil is some of the worst in my yard to be fair. More clay than soil I think! She never bloomed in that spot, and never really grew. Maybe the soil was too heavy and she wasn't getting as much water as I thought. I have a polyantha, 'Sweet Pea', in that bed who's done alright, but started as a two gallon plant where CPM was a one gallon. I moved CPM this spring to a spot with much fluffier soil (still clay but soooo much easier to dig in) and more sun and she's doubled in size already and has two blooms!

I have a molineux that blooms like carzy all summer, was hoping CPM did the same.

I have Belindas dream planted last winter. So far not too impressed, most of the blooms are on the ground from drooping, I dont like that look. I am hoping it improves with age.

Stingy bloomers is not something I want. Perhaps it does better in N Cal than S Cal? Its one of the highest rated roses I found on HMF in every category.

Would love to hear from anyone growing this near Sac.

How big do both of these get for you, if you grow them.

I would also recommend either of these roses, esp. Belindas Dream. I have a huge bush of her, accidentally got some heavy duty weed spray on her [more potent that roundup] and I was afraid she would die. I trimmed her back......and now she is back to full size, blooming her head off and I cant tell she was ever affected. She doesnt have a scent, but is disease free, blooms all year and is a beautiful shrub. She would be my choice, and was the rose I thought of even before I read hoov's answer. Another one that comes to mind is Valentine - it isnt as tall as Belinda, but blooms constantly. Another big red is Cadenza - tough and blooms lots. Eutin is another red that blooms alot.
