Suggestions for new rose garden

Hearing that Vintage is closing made me decide that I need to create a little heritage rose garden and I was hoping for some suggestions on what to plant, the selection is so huge at Vintage it's hard to know where to start. I would like to have a nice blend of color, class, fragrance, rebloom, and form. I live in Sonoma county, just a couple of miles away from where Vintage Gardens is located.

This is the list I've come up with so far, I would love to hear if these are all good or if I should chose others or just add some.

I don't have experience with the others you mentioned,...
I have heard that Chinatown and Lemon Spice are quite fragrant, but I don't know much about them.

but I have Archduke Charles and I think Archduc Charles is absolutely charming and gorgeous. Other people on this forum recommended it before I got it. :)

I've heard it doesn't get super huge. Apparently it blooms pretty much year round, even in Dec, but perhaps the most charming thing might be the color changing aspect of the blooms. If I can remember right... It starts out reddish intense pink, turns pale in the center, and then turns red again, but only where the sun hits it. Pretty fascinating to me! :)

Amazingly beautiful. If it was me, I'd get this rose for sure! Wish I had room for a new rose garden. I don't even have room for one more rose!

Most European OGRs bloom on old wood -- even many of those which repeat. So what happens is that new canes (thick shoots from the base) will grow this year, and next year will bloom on laterals on last year's canes. After the first flush, if you cut back the laterals on last year's shoots, they'll bloom again (if the rose repeats). Basically, they bloom on new shoots growing from last year's canes. This is the case for most of the long-caned Bourbons and Hybrid Perpetuals. Some of those with an extra dose of China or Tea will bloom on new shoots the same year, but 'Zephirine Drouhin' isn't one of those. So if this rose is new for you, don't expect much in the way of blooms the first year -- sometimes not much the second year, either. The rose first needs to grow its layer of canes which will mature and then flowerHybrid Teas and Floribundas have heavier doeses of China-derived repeat-blooming genes, and so they will bloom on new shoots their first year (hence their being able to take hard-pruning in Spring and still flower that same year). :-) ~Christopher

Thanks all for your comments. I don't know what kind of brain trance I was in, Sherry. I always cut down the photo size, but didn't do it. Here is a shot from further away from the rose garden (It was half planted here) There are irises inside the first division bricks on the right, and daylilies inside the larger bricks next to it. There is a large iris bed, behind the knock out roses on the left. There are two more pretty large iris beds and Four large beds of daylilies. These beds are on the other side of the greenhouse. In the first picture, that is a butterfly garden across from the rose garden. I know, I know, but I work so I can garden. I suppose I need a 12 step program, but I don;t want to stop! kay

I cut my teeth on the high maintenance, exhibition type roses of the 50's to 90's era and in the early 90's made a complete about face with going over to predominantly hybrid rugosas. Cardinal rule #1 - NO MORE SPRAYING! Although the hyb. rugosas are very iron clad, I am spreading my wings, incorporating more "showy" classes of roses, but maintaining my 'prime directive' of: no-spray (except for midge fly...a necessary evil if I want any flowers all season), continuous blooming, fragrant, and winter hardy roses. Here is my current in-bed list, most have multiple, 2-5, representatives in the rose bed, essentially an oblong island bed, a rather large one, about 3 roses deep across its narrower width. Quietness (5) Carefree Beauty (4) Marie Pavie (2) Marie Daly (3) Jacques Cartier (1) Schneekoppe* (2) *the only two surviving hy. rugosas after Henry Hudson* (1) the hybrid r. purge. Golden Unicorn (2) Innocensia (Kordes - 1) The bed has room for about 25 bushes if their spread is 2-3' each. The colors I prefer in roses are in the light range: pink, cream, white, pale orange, apricot, peach and yellow. I spend a lot of time after sunset often as late as in the early AM hours, weather permitting, praying, contemplating and relaxing outside near the rose bed. The light colored flowers stand out like beacons at night. I guess you can say I am one of the few persons who enjoys his roses in the dark almost as much as in broad daylight. Bernik, I'm not familiar with the roses you plan to use, so can't say how they would look, depends so much on where you are most often viewing your roses from. But in general, I would plant by expected height and habit first, making sure you've left enough space between each. You could put lower-growing roses with perhaps a more trailing habit at the front of the walk, and taller ones at the back. If that's a fence border in front, you could consider a climber on either side. Color is too personal for advice. I like to have waves of similarly pale roses, waves of similarly orange to reddish to yellow to buff roses, with a few true pinks and deep magentas here and there. I work with a cottage garden style, where you might prefer a different look. Try not to worry about getting it perfect. Every rose grower looks at their garden and mentally moves roses about like furniture, because that Tchaikovsky would obviously be better on the other side of the porch, now that we see it's growth habit in maturity. But roses aren't furniture, and they don't take to being moved around much. Sometimes you end up with a bit of regret. Since you probably aren't putting them into the ground yet—we have to wait till late May/early June here in Asheville, so the ground is fully warmed up—you still have time to keep looking at rose photos online, making sure you know the color and habit of each rose, and mentally moving them around till you land on what feels right to you. The only one from your list that I grow is Quatre Saisons Blanc Mousseaux. I planted it early this spring as a band. It hasn't bloomed all that much, but I think it is still in its growing phase at the moment. I just was outside this afternoon checking on my roses, and I see that in the past couple of days its shot a new 8inch cane up. Its a pretty quick grower, and hasn't had ANY disease issues (and trust me my garden in BS infested with all the rain and cool days we've had here lately!!) The other good thing about it is that it has kept all of its foliage, and doesn't have those "bare leg" issues that my other moss roses have!

I'm jealous that you're in zone 8! I would love to have a larger variety of teas and noisettes that I can put in the ground, rather than keep in containers!

It might be fun to plant some of the really rare ones, so that you can assist in keeping diversity alive in rose culture. Since you live so close, perhaps you can speak to someone there.

"Grandmother's Hat" -- In Southern California, and much of NoCal as well, it's a superb rose -- ever-blooming, disease-free, graceful, and versatile.

Red Chinas -- 'Louis Phillipe,' and/or 'Cramoisi Superieur,' and/or 'White Pearl In Red Dragon's Mouth.' Or maybe some of the "found" Red Chinas, such as "Magnolia Cemetery Rose," and/or "Elisabeth's China."

'Reve d'Or,' and/or 'Crepuscule,' and/or 'Lamarque.' Wonderful, fragrant, disease-resistant Tea/Noisettes . . .

'Rosette Delizy,' for a bright spot of color.

Peachymomo, I believe that your Ausmas is better known by another name: Graham Thomas. Graham is a lovely and fragrant yellow Austin rose. Many people, including me, have trouble keeping him to any kind of reasonable size. In my case, so much trouble that he is no longer with the program. If you place him someplace where you don't mind if he becomes a climber, however, you might find that you love him a great deal. Others surely do.

For us, Graham Thomas not only sprawled, he committed the cardinal sin of mildewing on new growth, in our often-foggy coastal climate. He was also a sparse bloomer here.

I think if I'd espaliered him along something like a picket fence, where the wind blew through, and he could have bloomed on laterals, he might have been worthwhile, but we had him in the early days of Austins, and he was just annoying.

For us, where blackspot is rarely an issue, Golden Celebration is a far better yellow.

I have Graham Thomas here in Encino, Jeri, not by choice, either. He's well entrenched and will require a back hoe to remove. I have him espaliered on 8' tall poles as you would a climber. He continues to demand being allowed to produce five to six foot "stems" as laterals or no flowers. When you get them, they're really pretty, but he's the Austin equivalent of Polka...pretty when it's pretty; stiff, thorny and over sized the rest of the time. The landscaper who bought Limberlost installed the English roses here just after he bought the nursery, destroying the hibiscus and terrestrial orchids to do it. Kim

I hear you, Kim. I am sorry to say that I really came to HATE that rose. I was not the least bit sorry when, having been dug up, he died waiting for a new spot.
I'd come to feel his best "spot" would be in Hades.

After him, we went through 'The Pilgrim,' which in our climate was yet another Jolly Green Giant. I'm not sure why I still had the nerve to try 'Golden Celebration,' but I'm glad I did.

Still, that hedge of 6 Golden Celebrations is the last bit of major garden space I'll devote to Austin roses.

Yes ma'am, The Pilgrim is that here, too, but at least it FLOWERS fairly regularly. I have to whack it back to the nubs then it shoots out and flowers. These were just not the right things to put in raised terraces so close to the house and front walk but they are what they are. I came to feel the same about Austin roses. I now only have the landscaper installed ones which have been here for quite a few years. All the potted ones waiting for garden space have gone on to other homes. The only one I have any longing for is English Elegance. Here, that is one tough, beautiful flower. Kim

Thank you everyone! I just got home from a trip where I didn't have access to a computer and it was delightful to return to such a goldmine of recommendations!

I ordered Rose de Rescht and Secret Garden Musk Climber from Vintage last fall and they are growing happily in my little rose nursery that is about to get a lot bigger.

Some day I hope to post pictures of my beautiful heritage garden :o)
