New Antique Roses Rose Garden

Most of the roses are now in the ground now. (Most of them came from Vintage) I planted a couple of clematis because I think they will look good with the roses, and I have some lavender coming to plant along one side.

You know I have already picked out more roses for spring, so this garden will be expanding (somewhat slowly so DH doesn't get too big a shock at losing another chunk of lawn), but it will happen.

Most, but not all of these rose are OGR, and I very excited with this new garden. This is the view from the back of the roses:

It is more of a rose bed that a garden, but it is a beginning and I am very happy to have these roses.

Looks like a lot of work doing all that planting and bed preparation. I bet it will fill in very lovely and you'll be rewarded for all your efforts with a very beautiful garden.

Looking good, Kay!!! Very nice plan. Are those irises inside the bricks? Tell us what you planted and where you are, please. I'm so nosey! I know it's a lot of work but now that the digging is done, the hard part comes - waiting for them to grow!! Watching every bit of new growth is exciting and fun. More views are always welcome, but downsize your pics just a bit - small or medium is great.

Most European OGRs bloom on old wood -- even many of those which repeat. So what happens is that new canes (thick shoots from the base) will grow this year, and next year will bloom on laterals on last year's canes. After the first flush, if you cut back the laterals on last year's shoots, they'll bloom again (if the rose repeats). Basically, they bloom on new shoots growing from last year's canes. This is the case for most of the long-caned Bourbons and Hybrid Perpetuals. Some of those with an extra dose of China or Tea will bloom on new shoots the same year, but 'Zephirine Drouhin' isn't one of those. So if this rose is new for you, don't expect much in the way of blooms the first year -- sometimes not much the second year, either. The rose first needs to grow its layer of canes which will mature and then flowerHybrid Teas and Floribundas have heavier doeses of China-derived repeat-blooming genes, and so they will bloom on new shoots their first year (hence their being able to take hard-pruning in Spring and still flower that same year). :-) ~Christopher

Thank you all for your advice...greatly appreciated. Karolina and Krista, your photos of your roses are inspiring. Dear Laura, First, let give some background. I cut my teeth on the high maintenance, exhibition type roses of the 50's to 90's era and in the early 90's made a complete about face with going over to predominantly hybrid rugosas. Cardinal rule #1 - NO MORE SPRAYING! Although the hyb. rugosas are very iron clad, I am spreading my wings, incorporating more "showy" classes of roses, but maintaining my 'prime directive' of: no-spray (except for midge fly...a necessary evil if I want any flowers all season), continuous blooming, fragrant, and winter hardy roses. Here is my current in-bed list, most have multiple, 2-5, representatives in the rose bed, essentially an oblong island bed, a rather large one, about 3 roses deep across its narrower width. Quietness (5) Carefree Beauty (4) Marie Pavie (2) Marie Daly (3) Jacques Cartier (1) Schneekoppe* (2) *the only two surviving hy. rugosas after Henry Hudson* (1) the hybrid r. purge. Golden Unicorn (2) Innocensia (Kordes - 1) The bed has room for about 25 bushes if their spread is 2-3' each. The colors I prefer in roses are in the light range: pink, cream, white, pale orange, apricot, peach and yellow. I spend a lot of time after sunset often as late as in the early AM hours, weather permitting, praying, contemplating and relaxing outside near the rose bed. The light colored flowers stand out like beacons at night. I guess you can say I am one of the few persons who enjoys his roses in the dark almost as much as in broad daylight. I would try one of the Lacharme Bourbons (or Noisettes, if you prefer). Boule de Niege and Coquette des Blanches can still be found, I believe, and RU was selling Lady Emily Peel and Louise d'Arzens at least a year ago. The reason I suggest them is that they are charming bushes of small stature with rapid repeat and, the one I had, Marie Dermar, a seedling of Louise had no BS at all. Princesse de Nassau has repeat bloom, small stature and the foliage is as pretty as the flowers.

That is going to be VERY pretty in a couple of years. Can't wait to see pictures of it when it matures (of course, all the grass will be gone by then!). Yes, I'm curious, too, what roses you have. Looks like you put in a lot of hard work. It will be worth it! :)

Here is a shot from further away from the rose garden (It was half planted here)

There are irises inside the first division bricks on the right, and daylilies inside the larger bricks next to it. There is a large iris bed, behind the knock out roses on the left. There are two more pretty large iris beds and Four large beds of daylilies. These beds are on the other side of the greenhouse.

In the first picture, that is a butterfly garden across from the rose garden.

I know, I know, but I work so I can garden. I suppose I need a 12 step program, but I don;t want to stop!

Kay, you've just started, so don't even think about stopping! I love your design and I think even by spring your area will look so much fuller with rose blooms on your little roses. It's going to be so exciting, and I'm thrilled for you. Sharing the beginning and growth of someone else's garden of old roses is almost as exciting as watching one's own, and I hope you'll be sharing your garden with us for a long time to come.

Thank you so much. I had to make my first Vintage order for spring, since there are so many I see written about that I don't have anything like yet.

Before this garden came into being, I had a couple of little rose islands with a half dozen or so bushes each...mostly hybrid teas, and and a New Dawn that has taught me how fast a rose can grow to be a large presence in the garden.

But I love the look of the old roses, I am always hunting for roses like my Granny grew. Ah, the fragrance of them!

I can't tell for sure and obviously the selection of roses makes a difference, but just off hand, I think you have planted the roses too close together. It is a problem that almost all of us made as beginners. It is hard to imagine how big those little bands are going to get. You might want to do a little more research and visit some mature gardens to get a better idea and move things while it is still easy to do so.

Catsrose is probably right, but by then you will know which ones that you want to remove and which ones you want to move to other places.
