Does Anyone Grow This Rose?

I've just received a list of new roses on offer at Vintage and fell head over heels for the Bourbon Comice de Tarn-et-Garonne. I'll literally have to plant it on top of another rose since I have NO place for it but at the moment I don't care and it doesn't arrive until March. Does anyone have this rose? I'd love to know more about it.

Also, I've just discovered that the Duchess of Albany is a sport of La France. Again, is anyone familiar with this one? It's apparently a slightly darker pink than La France but I wonder if it's in any way superior to it. I have La France on order but would change it if the Duchess is in any way "more better".

Thanks for any help you can give on this.

I just donated my Duchess of Albany to Brooklyn Botanical Garden...If you love LaFrance you'll love it. Old drawings of it show a truly red rose it is not. A deeper magenta pink reverse is all it is , it was worth looking at for 2 years and studying. I have a small space so it needed to go. I have a problem with own root LaFrance it's usually not very vigorous. I have a grafted Pickering LaFrance and it's a bloom machine. Own root if it's double it's size in 2 years you'll be lucky..great fragrance unbeatable like LaFrance.

labrea, was your Duchess of Albany more vigorous than La France, and was it own-root or grafted? Either of these roses will be own-root since they're from Vintage and I would like the one that blooms more, if there is a difference.

I grow ‘William Allen Richardson’ in San Marcos, Tx. It was a band sized plant from Vintage. The plant is now approx 6’ wide x 4.5’ tall- disease resistant, heat tolerant and a free bloomer. His blooms lighten up significantly in the strong Tx sun.

Voodoo - Does anyone grow this rose?

Yes, I grow it, wonderful rose! It takes the heat like a champion, we had 3 straight weeks of 100+ , days as high as 110, nights still in the 80s, and Voodoo bloomed right through it. The colors are wonderful, you’ll see apricot, yellow orange and red, sometimes all on the same flower. The fragrance is very good, too. The plant is bushy, healthy, has very glossy foliage. I’m glad you asked about it, it doesn’t seem to generate much interest here and that’s a shame. I’d vote Voodoo over both DCT (far more fragrant, ages better) and Valencia (more interesting color).

I would recommend a mix of a few varieties because you have a warm climate and can thus have roses year round if you do a mix of different species. Well except maybe for this last year with your crazy snowstorm! What I have noticed about the Austin roses is that they behave for me as if the winter was a real thing here in Los Angeles. They might be daylight tuned? They bloom through the late fall and then completely stop and go dormant with no blooms from Dec-Mar regardless of whether I prune them. Then they put out an incredible Spring flush and bloom through the summer and into fall, but to a lesser extent. The Teas (and I mean real Teas not Hybrid Teas) pretty much bloom in the complete opposite seasons. Teas come from warmer places in China and they do have a wonderful Spring flush but then it gets hot and they stop blooming. Then the Teas put out an amazing fall flush that continues through the end of February. Basically the Teas bloom all winter and the Austins bloom all summer. I only have one modern Hybrid Tea “Belinda’s Blush” and she blooms with the Austin’s. I also have a collection of Polyantha roses, which seem to bloom year round. The only time they stop is when I prune them back hard in February. Marie Pavie is already setting buds 6 weeks after her hard prune.

Does anyone grow desert rose?

I've started a thread in the Adenium forum asking a few questions about desert rose. It‘s not a very active forum and it occured to me that with all the Floridians in this forum one of you might be growing desert rose and would be able to help answer my questions. No there both pretty much the same in terms of bloom production the grafted came from Pickering and it was fully 5 ft and full in 2 years.

*** A woman I knew grew Comice de Tarn-et-Garonne in Thousand Oaks, CA. Not nearly as hot and dry as your location, Ingrid, but considerably hotter and dryer than my coastal area, just a few miles away.
She loved the blooms, but reported that it mildewed horribly in her no-spray garden.

Oh, that's not good news about the mildew Jeri. This spring for the first time I had quite a bit of mildew and it was not pretty. I'll be sure to put it in a sunny and airy spot and hope for the best. As you say it is (usually) hotter and drier here and this rose seems worth the gamble. I'm really glad you mentioned this since it will make a difference as to where I place it. Thanks.
