My guess is that it might not like "household insect spray". If it were mine, I would just leave it alone for a while, except for making sure it has enough water. Then hopefully it will start to put out some new growth. When it does, I would fertilize it, but be careful not to overdo it.

Where are you, and what kind of rose is it? Has it been very sunny and hot there lately? Knowing more details would help.

Brown edges-- salt poisoning perhaps from over-fertilizing. Flush the soil with two or three inches of water and then let it dry enough to aereate.

Yellowing with green veins-- could be iron or manganese deficiency, but I suspect spider mites are the main cause. If so, you can see fine pale stippling with a hand lens, and the underside looks dirty and webby. Please check for mites and come back.

Do not use an aerosol unless it is labelled for plants. Do not use insecticide routinely as it can cause spider mite outbreaks. Do not exceed label dose of fertilizer or double up with different fertilizers.

If there is iron or manganese deficiency, alkaline soil is usually the main cause. Fertilizing with MG for Roses or Miracid will supply these nutrients in available form.

I agree with Michael - looks like spider mite damage.

Ditto on the Spider Mites. A sharp blast of water to the underside of the leaves should blow them off. Also I never put a small cutting/plant in a large pot. Too easy to over water and rot a small root system. Overwatering can also lead to leaching out valuable nutrients. I agree with Michael that Miracle Gro for Azaleas applied at 1/2 strength or less every other week should help. I can't tell how large your cutting is or how large this new pot is, but for most of the small rooted cuttings I receive from mail order nurseries such as Heirloom and Rogue Valley, I usually don't need a pot bigger then 6 inches. When the roots start showing through the drainage holes it's time to "up-pot" (as I call it) to an 8" pot and from there upwards in 2 inch increments......Maryl

Yet, in the last photo there are two emerging bits of new growth spouting from the leaf buds. I'd say it's working to get itself established, which is a very good thing. Reason for hope!

Of course wash off the foliage daily to control spider mites, but cuttings often look like crap until they really get going.

Thank you so much for the prompt responses to my questions. Let me elaborate a bit on my growing situation. The spray that I used is called Garden Safe- housplant and garden insect killer and it's made by Schultz. Right now the plant is kept indoors on a window because I am hoping to plant it next spring to give it the best chance. I have never fertilized it and it is in a 5 inch pot (before that it was a dixie cup)..

The reason that I sprayed them was because I believe that I had fungus gnats. I saw small little flying things emerge whenever I took the plant to the sink to water it and I would also see them in the soil. I read that people frequently see these when they use miracle grow soil (which I used).

The odd thing is that I also see webs on the leaves sometimes which I have read are an indication of spider mites. I've heard that to stop fungus gnats, you should keep the area dry, and to prevent spider mites, you should keep the area humid..

Spider Mites.
If it is still in a container, and you have a spray nozzle at your kitchen sink, turn it horizontally and use the spray to wash the foliage VIGOROUSLY, paying particular attention to the underside of the leaves.
Repeat daily for several days.

Spider mites are a potentially fatal problem. Worry about them rather than fungus gnats.

If the product you have been using contains only "potassium salts of fatty acids" (which is just old-fashioned soap), it can help control mites if sprayed to cover the undersides of leaves and the stems. However, it could be responsible for the foliar burn if you have put a lot of it in the soil or sprayed the leaves when the soil is dry and the plant is exposed to hot sun.

Conventional insecticides do not control mites but make them worse.

Roses are outdoor plants. We subject them to more harm to them by trying to baby them inside than they would suffer if they were protected outside. Spider mites are the main indoor pest. As michael said, a severe outbreak of spidermites can be fatal ... I've had it happen in my greenhouse, so I know from unfortunate experience.

Most people I counsel are killing their roses with kindness. If it were mine, this rose of yours would get a sharp blast of water underneath its leaves every day for two weeks, removal of the most damaged older leaves, the MG Azalea fertilizer that michael and maryl recommended (same formulation as Miracid ... I compared the labels when I was at the nursery the other week) and would be living outside.

Let us know how it's doing in a couple of weeks.

I wanted to thank you all for the advice on my rose cutting. Every day I have been taking all of my young cuttings to the sink and spraying the leaves and I haven't seen any more spider webs and the leaf damage seems to have stopped for the time being. Very interesting about insecticides not helping with spider mites. Thank you all again:)
