Hi Judith, I don't have that many Bucks but I like Paloma Blanca, in a good year. Prairie Star I picked out at Chamblee's on sight but it's taking a long time to establish. Mature, it has a nice scent and a hint of pink. Prairie Sunrise ia a joy to grow with minimal disease. Most others I grow you already have. :-)

have you thought about distant drums? I love the color combination - the flower quantity and rebloom is good, not as good as prairie breeze, but it's up there...so which of the bucks that you have now are your favorite?

i don't mean to hijack the thread but since you have prairie breeze, have you ever seen a dark red bloom on it? mine has one now and i'm not sure if it's from the weather or what's up- it's own root.

I grow quite a few Bucks, and some of my favorites that are going well for me are:

Pearlie Mae - Apricot blooms; large upright shrub always in bloom

Mountain Music - hard to describe, but the blooms are a blend of soft pink, orange, and yellow. One of my absolute favorites. Very striking.

Folksinger - Apricot; heavy bloomer

Honey Sweet - Coral; HT form blooms;

Prairie Sunrise - Apricot; good fragrance and rebloom

Polonaise - HMF calls this a dark pink but mine is red. I planted this as a small band this year and I just can't say enough about it. It has taken off and grown and bloomed non-stop; the blooms last about 10 days on the bush and in the vase. This may be my favorite Buck. I highly recommend Polonaise and don't know why we don't hear more about it.

Spanish Rhapsody - pink/yellow blooms. My plant is young but I like the blooms.

Bucred - Red; a blood machine but appears to shatter easily.
But always in bloom; very large bushy plant.

Iobelle - pink/white bi-color; very pretty; HT type blooms held high above bush.

Pipe Dreams- clear pink blooms w/dark pink markings on the blossoms. Very unusual.

I grow several more, but these are my favorites that I think you might like.

I also am enjoying my large collection of Buck roses, Quietness being my favorite of them all. I see that we grow many of the same ones, so here's a few you didn't list which I like (other than pink). There are so many wonderful Bucks to collect!

Celeste - I love the pic of Distant Drums. I had 2 own-root DD but they didn't make it through the winter. Is your plant grafted or own root?

I'm going to try again one more time with one grafted on multiflora and see if that gets it through the winter.

Artemis, mine is coming from Pickering. If this one doesn't make it, I'm going to give up. I remember Pappu's beautiful hedge of Distant Drums, and his comment about them being difficult but worth it. He's about an hour from me, so I know they can be grown here. But he's a magician with roses, and I just kinda putter....But that color just makes me want to try for a third time.

Earth Song is a great performer, nice big healthy shrub. I also love the pale-yellow blooms of Prairie Harvest which smell marvelous; in cool temps, the blooms are s0metimes streaked with apricot. ANd last but not least, Carefree Beauty, gotta have it!

I think the ones mentioned are the ones I have except for Country Dancer and Simon Estes. Someone suggested that Square Dancer may not be a heavy bloomer. This is my first year with it and the growth is good, I don't know about the heavy bloom, but the blooms are pretty.

I am not impressed with Gentle Persuasion. Is Katy Road Pink White a Buck rose?

I pulled a few Bucks because of black spot, and some of them seem to shatter quickly.

They are still just about my first choice.

Hi Carla, here I am! Just made a great road trip today - went to Chamblees, Blue Moon Gardens, the Edom Art Festival. My SO was a very good sport, never a complaint. We ate at his favorite mexican food resturant, so he came back full and happy! He even picked out a rose for his fence - a $2 Eden from the sale bin!! [he better plant it quick or else I will!]
I didnt exercise much self restraint.......here are the Bucks I got. If anyone grows these, would love to hear a comment!

And in the sale bin - some real finds: huge and healthy Thomas Affleck, Pink Gruss Au Auchen, Puerto Rico, White Katy Road Pink, Reine de Violettes, and Red Hearts. 25 in all......I cant wait to start digging in the morning! These Chamblees roses are SO healthy! I wish you all who order roses by mail could see these plants - Cinco de Mayo can be sold in 10 days........I need more of those sale roses........I think I will go back after I get these planted......will sneak up there one day during the week......

Lucky Judith, sounds like you had fun! And what a great haul! Please send me some pics when you have time.

BTW, how is Sunbonnet Sue? I've been on the fence about this one; most comments haven't been too positive and say it's stingy with rebloom. It probably is better for you in Texas than in Illinois, but I've always liked the pics I've seen.

I added Iobelle this spring; a very pretty white & pink bi-color lady; blooms look like HT blossoms on long stems. Nancy Lindley @ Great Lakes said I'll have to really winter protect her; she's more tender than the other Bucks.

Pearlie Mae is a graceful shrub with apricot blooms w/yellow centers; great choice. Mountain Music is another great choice; one of my favorites. Hope you get to see it in bloom before the season is over; it's very luminious. One of my favorites.

I got 11 roses planted yesterday.......more to do today - fun!! Mountain Music is about to bloom, so looking forward to that. Prairie Sunset is pretty, unusual........I love the color on Sunbonnet Sue, apricots being my favorite. The plant itself is quite small, own root, but its now in the ground so hopefully will take off. Its darker than Folksinger, Pearlie Mae. I really love the color so to me it will be worth pampering a bit to get it started. One I adore, that I bought on a whim, is Dorcas. Healthy, blooms lots [even late October, has numerous buds, blooms] and the blooms are hybrid tea form. Its next to Crepuscule and the colors look lovely together. Really like this one! For Chamblee fans........I was told that Mrs. Buck, when she visited Chamblees recently, allowed them to have some other Buck roses, so they are busy propagating them to be ready for fall 2009 - next time I go, I will find out what they are.

Judith, sounds like you had a blast. So many roses, how exciting. Luckily when I was at Chamblee's we had Renae as our tour guide, it was fun.

Carla, I remember Renae well. Frank, who knew so very much about roses and has passed on, has a niece, Maria, who works there now. She said Renae is doing well and living in N. Carolina. Maria learned much from Frank and is so much fun to visit with. Today, Prairie Sunset is blooming, as is Griff's Red [a rich chinese red]. All have buds - looking forward to seeing them prosper and bloom! Pretty quick........will be ready to go back for more!!
