Your Favorite Buck Roses
Comments (17)Hi Carla, here I am! Just made a great road trip today - went to Chamblees, Blue Moon Gardens, the Edom Art Festival. My SO was a very good sport, never a complaint. We ate at his favorite mexican food resturant, so he came back full and happy! He even picked out a rose for his fence - a $2 Eden from the sale bin!! [he better plant it quick or else I will!] I didnt exercise much self restraint.......here are the Bucks I got. If anyone grows these, would love to hear a comment! Do-Si-Do Pearlie Mae Iobelle Country Song Frontier Twirl Griff's Red Malaguena Sunbonnet Sue [already have one of these, but needed another!] Prairie Sunset Prairie Star [thanks to all the enablers - this is a favorite of Maria at Chamblees too!] Mountain Music Rural Rhythm I also had to have: another Allister Stella Gray, then got Molineaux, Pat Austin, Cl. Westerland, Cl. Jacob's Robe and Meredith Bohls. And in the sale bin - some real finds: huge and healthy Thomas Affleck, Pink Gruss Au Auchen, Puerto Rico, White Katy Road Pink, Reine de Violettes, and Red Hearts. 25 in all......I cant wait to start digging in the morning! These Chamblees roses are SO healthy! I wish you all who order roses by mail could see these plants - Cinco de Mayo can be sold in 10 days........I need more of those sale roses........I think I will go back after I get these planted......will sneak up there one day during the week...... Comments (48)My Earthsong (purchased from Sam Kedem) has survived for several years although a few years ago it didn't come back until almost July. I thought it had died. No fragrance that I can detect. I also have Prairie Breeze. Again no fragrance but huge blooms and very hardy. Quietness has nice bloom form and occasionally I can detect a little fragrance. I also have Griff's Red which is very hardy and has a little fragrance. Repeat not as good as the others. Honeysweet is my favorite with lots of blooms but still not much fragrance. September Song is not very impressive so far and Enchanted Autumn will probably not make it through another winter. Silver Shadows has been barely hanging on for several years (another Same Kedem along with Honeysweet) but it is very fragrant. Queen Bee and Distant Drums were not hardy here. For some reason blackspot is not too bad here and I don't spray so I can't comment on disease resistance. Many of my Austins do not get much blackspot either....See MoreWhat is your favorite rose to show at a rose show?

Comments (84)Thanks, northland. I treat my Bucks about like I treat my Austins. I don't water them once established. I usually just feed them in spring and use a Tone product first. Rose Tone, Plant Tone, Holly Tone, Garden Tone I think it is, or even Citrus Tone. They're all pretty similar. You can use those pretty early as they're organic and take time to become available to plants. I used to scatter alfalfa around but have since found that alfalfa tea works better. I use that sometimes in spring. Then I put out some 10-10-10 once it warms up and right before a rain. I used to get truck loads of leaf compost every spring but no longer have a truck and might not be up for unloading a truck anymore. Sometimes I get horse manure at a stable. Some years I use time release Scotts rose fertilizer. I spray fungicide approx. every two weeks until it gets really hot. Sometimes in winter I spray dormant oil to reduce blackspot and kill mite or bug eggs. One thing I've worked on the past year is cutting down on shade by removing trees or limbing them up. Next thing I need to do is hire some help. You commented that you think our climates are similar but I think they are not. I accidentally wrote " zone 3 7" . I meant just zone 7. Sorry for the confusion. I'm in NC. I don't do anything for winter protection here....See Morekarenforroses
