Prunning roses

It's late summer, and there are still some roses blooming. We have had a lot of rainfall this month and we have been away so the flowers have suffered a bit of attention. The rose bushes are shooting out stems that are like Jack in the Beanstalk, and they are heading toward the window screen. I am thinking of prunning this rose bush back to a more managle height. Have no idea what variety this rose is as it was planted by previous owners. Do you think I'll damage the rose bush by cutting it back now?
