The following may be useful in putting the concept of biocontrol into layman terms: "Disease-suppressive soil microorganisms have been found in many places. In monoculture wheat the severity of "take all" disease often decreases within three to five years. This phenomenon is known as "take all decline," and is considered an effective natural control. Although the mechanisms are not completely understood, the decline is associated with changes in soil microorganisms that compete with and prey on the fungus. Melon plants grown in the Chateaurenard region of France do not show Fusarium wilt symptoms even though the fungus is present in the soil. Soils with suppressive characteristics tend to develop slowly and are usually found in fields where perennial crops or monocultures have been grown for many years. Suppressiveness may be lost if the monoculture is interrupted even for one year, or if pesticides are applied. For example, researchers first recognized soils suppressive to cereal-cyst nematode when nematode numbers increased after application of a broad-spectrum biocide. I had to stop because of the storms late last afternoon here too. Not a bad storm though, just more rain. I hate it when it hails, too much damage. Nice and bright and sunny today for a change and I am back to prunning. Sorry to hear your roses were beaten up. In my garden, in spite of the fact that there has been rain just about everyday this entire spring, I had the best spring flush ever. It could have been better with somewhat less rain as many of the roses did rot but I can;'t complain at all.

Yeah, my right hand races the left hand while typing too. Austins often do better when not pruned. I used to grow Austins in your neck of the woods and they really resented being treated like a hybrid tea and being pruned down short every spring. when I left them unpruned and pegged the long canes to grow outwards in a big arch, they would cover themselves with flowers. In California, the larger Austins are often happier treated as climbers or big mounding shrubs. Pruning them down hard when they want to be large doesn't accomplish anything. Don't spray when the temp's going to be over 85 degrees that day, and make sure the roses are well watered a day or two before spraying.

Hi Faye, I am a novice when it comes to roses, but I bought 6 knockouts, four years ago and have cut them back at various times for various reasons and they recovered. Even though you will lose quite a bit of the current blooms by pruning now, my experience is that they will soon bloom again (or at least they do in zone5). Also, since you didn't do any pruning in the spring, you may have quite a few of the little skinny "twigs" that could (and probably should) be cut down to the ground. Roses of all kinds are often pruned in the summer to control their growth, so you could do it then too, as Cheryl suggested. (Make sure they have enough room or you will be continually trying to prune them back. Most of the knockouts grow at least three feet wide) Good luck! Patti
