Prunning again

As my spring flush is starting to end I am out there prunning my roses again today. What a big chore it is in the spring time and now another big batch of prunning.

I don't cut them back as much as I do in the spring but still cut back heavily. As I have lots of lily bulbs planted between the roses, it really helps to neaten up the beds and make the lily blooms easier to see. Another thing that makes it go faster is that some are still blooming so its not everything done at once. Will have to go back again later to prune those that are not done yet.

Even so, I never finish in one day. This was the best spring flush ever, even with all the rains we had which did really beat down lots of the roses.

Hi Rita, I am on the other side of the sound from you and I too am pruning today. With an electric hedge trimmer. Last night's torrential rains AND mammoth hale has done my roses in. On top of the three weeks of steady rain it looks pretty dismal out there. Even the weeds are crying uncle! Enjoy your garden. /Abi

I had to stop because of the storms late last afternoon here too. Not a bad storm though, just more rain. I hate it when it hails, too much damage. Nice and bright and sunny today for a change and I am back to prunning.

Sorry to hear your roses were beaten up. In my garden, in spite of the fact that there has been rain just about everyday this entire spring, I had the best spring flush ever. It could have been better with somewhat less rain as many of the roses did rot but I can;'t complain at all.

Kris, as Karl said, after spring pruning, there is no schedule. When you deadhead the plants after they have the first flush of bloom (like, now), you can cut them back at the same time. Since plants bloom at different times during our growing season, it is difficult to give a "schedule". If the blooms don't look good to you, and you want to reshape the plants, do it whenever you want to during the season. I define "season" as May - August. I wouldn't do any kind of pruning after September (I don't even deadhead after mid-October).

Yes, you are so right! I worked out all day yesterday. The only things I planted were the snapdragons. There is so much blooming right now it is beginning to look pretty. I put out the Blue ceramic birdbath and a couple of other things, but I mainly did (Yet more)digging, weeding, and trimming things. I dug up most of the oregano that had gone crazy, and left just a start of it again. I have this huge shrub that I am going to work at digging up today. The hummers and the butterflies love it, but it is in the wrong place and encroching on my daylilies. That will not do. I planted a piece of it, so if I kill it, it is okay. There is a new start ready to plant in the greenhouse. I also have three clumps of the Tropicana Cannas I am going to dig up. They just don't stay pretty where they are. I have a huge clump of them in another areas too that I will leave alone. kay

These all tend to get to be large trees - 40-50' tall and 25-30' wide at maturity - so keep that in mind when planting. In most suburban lots, one is usually sufficient! Larger properties/acreage can of course support more. And these also tend to be very difficult to garden under, due to the volume of surface roots, the shade cast by the wide canopies and the aggressiveness of the trees in grabbing all available soil moisture and nutrients. Both 'October Glory' and 'Autumn Blaze' are known for fall color but it may take to time to develop with reliability and is also quite weather dependant. You may want to do some research on pruning these types of trees. Maples - like most shade trees - do not develop defined leaders and attempting to create a leader is often counterproductive. This type of growth habit is called "decurrent" and does require some early structural training to develop the strong framework of scaffold branching that forms the crown of the tree. Honeysuckles tend to bunch up anyway, so promoting branching not a good idea. They also tend to flower on the ends of the branches. The value of vines on structures is to form a softening tracery over the structure: work on spreading the plant's branches out to provide a good coverage instead of heading it back.

We had the severe thunderstorm watch, but like Newyorkrita, only, merely got a deluge. Another one came through this morning, and I think it's dripping again. For the most part the roses have done fine, but I'm going to end up deadheading a lot of things I don't usually bother with. Instead of the petals dropping, they've turned into brown mush on the plants. Ugh.

Abi, hope things aren't damaged too badly.
