How Should I Prun This Rose in Spring?

This funky rose is my Eglentyen.

It has been getting pruned 2 feet off the ground in spring for the past 7 or 8 years. This year, due to my ignorace, 1. I hard pruned it in July, passed the recent growth of the season,

2. Burned the leaves by spraying for black spots which I did not have in the first place.

The rose stopped growing and due to chemical burn, lost all its leaves in July and August. In September, it started growing those long ( as long as 6') canes which buds are now forming on top of them.

My question is, should I prun it hard to 2 - 3 feet in Spring or put a support behind it and let it be a climber?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think you mean the Austin 'Eglantyne', right? Looks like a typical pink Austin to me. that's how they grow.

You could take it down to about 3', or grow it as a climber...pull all the canes as horizontal as possible and see if it produces blooming laterals. If you get laterals (short stems with flowers coming off the main long stems), great, keep it as a climber. If not, just take it down to 3' every year. As it matures it should produce more flowers.

Looks like my Redout/Mary Rose. They both get long canes, look leggy and only get some blooms on the tips. I just 'topped' mine so they look a bit neater. In February, I'll prune them down to about 2 ft, but I haven't had much luck with them. Once some of the teas I have mature, I'm going to move Redout and MR to a different spot and put teas where they are. Then I can let them grow as climbers if that's what they want to do. The canes seem a bit stiff to me to be a good climber.

If they have been in containers since last January, I would pass. Bare roots aren't dug here yet, so if they are bare roots, they'd have to have been in cold storage since last November. I'd pass. In CA, if you can buy fresh bare roots in late November, that's terrific. But there is hot weather yet to come in CA. You don't want to be messing with bare roots when the temperatures top 100 degrees. :-) Jeri

Hi Faye, I am a novice when it comes to roses, but I bought 6 knockouts, four years ago and have cut them back at various times for various reasons and they recovered. Even though you will lose quite a bit of the current blooms by pruning now, my experience is that they will soon bloom again (or at least they do in zone5). Also, since you didn't do any pruning in the spring, you may have quite a few of the little skinny "twigs" that could (and probably should) be cut down to the ground. Roses of all kinds are often pruned in the summer to control their growth, so you could do it then too, as Cheryl suggested. (Make sure they have enough room or you will be continually trying to prune them back. Most of the knockouts grow at least three feet wide) Good luck! Patti

In my opinion you did everything you should have done. I am facing the same thing with a few of mine. It was a rough winter and spring, some of mine that died back had been in the ground years. If it's a five foot tree and still looks like a tree after pruning (I have issues with keeping trees that look gross due to whatever:)) you could wrap it or spray with WiltPruf or both. Japanese maples are harder to grow for those of us in zone 5. I usually wrap mine until they are too big to wrap with floating row cover. Hope this helps. Kay

As the originator of the one cane removal technique, I can tell that it works sometimes. Sometimes is a whole lot better than never. One scientist has said to me that how can you tell it doesn't come back. I have responded to him, after ten years of good healthy growth, that should be enough. I don't think it works for fall infected hybrid teas as I didn't save any of mine that got fall infections that I saw the following spring. The other thing I do is check with a microscope to see if the infected bush is teaming with eriophyid mites. Mine aren't. I don't use insecticide or acaricides and I see beneficials at the microscopic and visbile to the naked eye sizes. Here's my ebook about RRD/RRv for those who haven't seen it before. Yes, I mean the Austin 'Eglantyne'. Sorry for mis spelling it. On hand always types faster than the other, hence letters sometimes are out of order.

Yeah, my right hand races the left hand while typing too.

Austins often do better when not pruned. I used to grow Austins in your neck of the woods and they really resented being treated like a hybrid tea and being pruned down short every spring. when I left them unpruned and pegged the long canes to grow outwards in a big arch, they would cover themselves with flowers. In California, the larger Austins are often happier treated as climbers or big mounding shrubs. Pruning them down hard when they want to be large doesn't accomplish anything.

Don't spray when the temp's going to be over 85 degrees that day, and make sure the roses are well watered a day or two before spraying.
