RRD hit Darlow's Enigma this year in my garden. A couple years ago it attacked White Dawn. I took White Dawn out completely because I caught it way too late.

I've taken out all of the cane that held the RRD on this latest victim and am hoping for the best. I am like you, hoping that I found it early enough.

I'm on the look out for it. RRD is on the fence rows and roadsides here, so I know it will come ... it's just a matter of when.

This is the time of the season when I found it on Mannington Mauve Rambler last year. I thought I found it early enough, cut the offending cane to the ground, and waited till spring. Bud break in spring confirmed that the virus was throughout the plant, so I removed it without hesitation.

My current crusade is to educate rose growers about this disease. So many have no idea that it exists. I'm doing what I can to change that.

I don't know how to tell the difference between RRD and Round Up damage. The ones I lost were near a path where I sprayed. Sometimes the rose surprises me with a long branch that I don't see. It simply sneaks up on me under mulch or under another branch that I think is the lowest branch.

I will see the deteriation, begin cutting, and see the sneaky branch. Whatever the problem is, the rose never survives. That makes me think that I have very little RRD, and more Round Up carelessness.

I intend to begin using a roller around my paths rather than the spray.

Around 2007, I had my first case of RRD on 2 adjacent thornless multiflora rosebushes. About a month later in another area of the garden, my Petite Pink Scotch came down with it. In 2009, my 6ft tall Robin Hood caught it.
In all cases I cut the bushes way back to the ground. Then the following spring they sprouted and looked fine and I assumed I had caught and removed the diseased portions in time. In mid summer they all showed signs of the disease. I again cut them back to the ground but this time I sprayed them several times with roundup to kill the bush completely. My conclusion is that now if I see a bush with RRD, I shall prune it to the ground, bag and discard the prunings and immediately spray the remains with Roundup. By letting the bush regrow, I was unknowingly providing an infected source for a mite to land on, ingest, and then spread the infection. In no way were the witches brooms due to Round Up since none had been used in the area.
The mite is spread by the wind. In all three cases, I had noticed we had strong crazy winds about a month before I noticed the damage. Crazy in the sense the winds kept whipping around changing direction constantly and whipping the tree branches first in one direction and then another.
In addition, now when we get violent winds, I start looking for RRD several weeks after the wind and continue to look for signs.
