This is what I have sowed for the 2010 season. I have them in 5 1/2 oz. clear plastic cups Bonnie Peppers, Apple habanero, Peach Habanero, Zambia, Mini Bells, Ivory Habanero, Tree Habanero, Yellow Pequin, Peter Pepper, and some pepper that I bought a a local Vons Market called Holland Hot? I believe its a cayenne type.Well thats it for now. I plan on getting more started later on as soon as I do I will post the peppers . How bout it, what do others got growing for 2010???????

I won't be starting seed until February but here is the list of what I'm planning to grow in 2010.

Interesting, promethean. My seedin onions are already growing out in the cold. Lastyear (Jan 09) I planted these very small seed onions. Obviously they wintered. In the spring time some of them flowered(mostly red ones) but most did not. I actually collected some seeds from those. I think seed onions were bigger than 3/16", maybe good 1/4". So that tells me that biggers seed onions might get confused. Nice to know. I have planted some seed onions this past December, some two weeks ago and I will plant some more next week. This way I will have a rough experiment to find out which timing does better. ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS; INTERNET IS GREAT. I WONDER HOW AND WHAT DID THE GARDENERS DO BEFORE INTERNET!!!

Looking at these pictures, almost all of them came directly from the hybridizers. I rarely buy plants any more from secondary sources! Those by Jim Murphy and Margo Reed came from them at Woodhenge Gardens. Those by Bret Clement came from him. Bret is listed on the Reg. 2 hybridizers site. Judy Davisson's plants came directly from her, and CORAL QUASAR came from Paul Owen. CRAZY ARMS came from Floyd Cove, and those by Dan Hansen came from Ladybug. The last two by Ned Roberts came from Ellen Strickland, who is now deceased, but she used to be an aficianado in regard to spiders and UFs.

Jay, I am married to a former Pennsylvanian and he still has relatives there who garden and every summer I envy their cool temperatures (you know, they think 85 degrees is hot) and their usually abundant rainfall. When we go there to visit in summertime, everything is so lush and lovely that it blows my mind, especially compared to how roasting hot and tired everything looks in this part of the country at the same time. On the other hand, Late Blight seems to be on a tear there the last few years, so their beaufiful crops can fail suddenly. Marcy, That's a great list from the Kerr Center. Thanks for linking it. Susan, I think each of us adds/drops varieties for many reasons. After growing tomatoes for 25 years on my own and for at least 15 years with my dad prior to that, I'm just through with the massive experimentation. The truth is that out of every 20 or 25 new (to me) varieties that I try, maybe one or two is worth putting into the permanent growing rotation. So, rather than constantly looking for something new, I'm trying to refine the grow list and weed out those that perform least well in a broad range of conditions. I've reached the conclusion that there really aren't many, or maybe not any, incredible undiscovered varieties out there that taste/perform significantly better than what I've already tried....so I've stopped looking. I had high hopes for the Brandymaster series, likely because it is so tempting to believe there could be anything that could match Brandywine's flavor. They've performed so poorly here that I doubt I'd see a better performance next year or the year after. While many of you may be seeing significantly hotter or drier weather this year than in your average year, for us here in southcentral OK, our rainfall has been exactly 'average' for the year to date and so have our temperatures. If anything we've had slightly lower temperatures, in general, in Love County than we usually have although higher than average heat indices. So, for me, this is a pretty typical year except the real heat arrived in mid-May instead of late June so we got hot earlier, but not necessarily hotter than average...just earlier than average. A tomato variety that didn't perform well in what was a fairly typical year here at our place this year likely wouldn't perform any differently next year. In Oklahoma we have a wide range of average annual rainfall....some folks may average 15" of rainfall per year in western OK while others in eastern OK may average 50-60" or more. Humidity varies widely as does soil type and pH. So, what grows well for someone in highly alkaline soil and water in western OK may not grow nearly as well for someone in eastern OK with entirely different weather and soil. I enjoy looking at everybody's lists and hearing how different tomatoes perform for different people but I know that works well in areas drastically different from mine may not work well here. Growing in containers is much more complicated. First of all, nothing that I grow performs as well in containers as in the ground. Heat and pests hit container-grown plants much harder every year than those in the ground. The grasshoppers have completely stripped my container tomatoes of every leaf and fruit, but have only done sporadic damage to in-ground plants. It is the same thing with spider mites....only the container plants have had issues with them this summer. For me, container-grown tomatoes are great from Jan. or Feb. through the end of June or early July. After that, I might as well yank out those plants and toss them on the compost pile because they're toast. Last year, the tomatoes in containers did somewhat better than they usually do....but we had much higher than average rainfall and much more rain/clouds/cool weather than we see in an average summer. I'm looking for plants that perform best in the worst of conditions, not the best ones, because more often than not, we get the worst conditions every July and August. In containers, I plant tomatoes that can tolerate the heat and the restriction of their root growth and still perform. That means I often grow tomatoes in containers that I don't consider 'good enough' to plant into the ground....stuff like Better Bush and Husky Red Cherry. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm just at the point that I want what produces best for us here, and I don't want to keep looking for something 'better' because I don't think there is anything out there that's really that much better than our tried and true varieties that make our grow list most years. For a long time, I gardened for fun....trying any and every thing that interested me. We ate all we wanted fresh and gave tons away and didn't care if we put up much for the non-gardening season or not. In recent years, though, I've developed a deeper appreciation for the truly superior flavor of anything/everything that's grown locally and picked/prepared/preserved at its peak of perfection. Thus, I give away little and try to raise as much of our annual food supply as possible. In a good year I fill up three freezers, a root cellar and manage to can 2 or 3 or 4 hundred jars of 'stuff'. Since that is what is important to me now, I want plants that produce well, that provide tasty food we like and that are not prima donnas requiring a lot of pampering. Thus, I'm less inclined to experiment and more inclined to plant what produces really well with little fuss. In a lot of ways, the 'experimentation years' were a lot more fun, but the farm-garden-preserving years have been much more productive. Now my family is spoiled and I must produce as much home-grown food as possible because they don't like grocery store stuff as much as they used to. Even DS's firestation co-workers prefer fresh, home-grown and I'm going to try to plant a lot more for them next year so I can send them all the tomatoes, peppers and other yuummy things they're craving. There just isn't room, or enough improved soil, to experiment with varieties now as there used to be. I don't mind that, really, because as long as what I'm growing is producing well, I've gotten over thinking there are incredible varieties out there just waiting for me to find them. Megan, Black Plum grew very well for me for a long time and then for 2 or 3 years it didn't and I dropped it. It is odd how that happens....and I loved Coyote too. If my garden were twice as large as it is, I'd bring it back to the grow list. So many varieties, so little time (and improved soil). The tomatoes I grow from seed invariably outperform storebought ones and I don't know why, but I've seen it enough years to know it is true. Dawn

Right now I'm just wishing warm weather would come to stay. About the only thing I'm doing different this year is I'm starting a lot more plants with seed. It's so much easier on the budget. I also have a few new trees that I'm waiting to see blossom. It's good to see these things come to life, isn't it?

I'm starting to transplant them in some 2 litre plastic bottles they already have their tru leaves and are about 3" -4" tall. I also made a sort of green house and are keeping them outside th green house is made out of a sun window I bought at the swap meet a few months ago. hopefully they will be comfy They are the tree habs , the ivory habs, the peter peppers. aand some other two or three it got dark so I stopped but continuing tomorrow

Wow, you folks are serious! I order my seeds over Christmas break, then look at the packages, shake them and oh and ahhh over them until February. Truly only 1.5 months away from planting day!

Like jrslick will be waiting until February. Probably the last week in February to plant my seed. I started February 1st last year for my Chinense and many of them were 12-18 inches tall by March 1st. It was hard to keep then under the lights I have.

I already have my seeds for next season thanks to several members here and also my order from TGSC which came yesterday.

Scotch Bonnet Orange, Caribbean Red, Habanero Golden, Orange Manzano, Golden Cayenne, California Chili, Chimayo, Crunch Sweet Orange, Sweet Cayenne, Sweet Banana, Sweet Pickle, Tam Jalapeno, Senorita Hybrid Jalapeno, Trinidad Perfume, Habanero Arbol and possibly 7-pot.

I also grow several bell pepper plants.

I really don't have room for all of these. I'm over my limit by about 3 plants. The Chimayo and 7-pot are on the bubble.

Smokemaster, that is quite the collection, no wonder I got so many of your seed packs in the exchange. I have to admit, I'm not one for seed mixes, but I kept thinking there might be something good in there. I've already started a couple of the mystery pepper plants, now I'm gonna have to plant the whole packet! LOL

Glad I didnt thow them in the trash(I almost did!)

I'm up to about 1500 varieties and strains of non bell peppers.Working on 400-500 more,I hope this season.Trades from Brazil,Mexico,Peru might bring something interesting.
Added 30 or so varieties last week.
As long as the seeds in the mystery pack were mixed well enough there is a chance of getting something good or rare(to some extent).
I trade a lot of seeds each year and always find spilled seeds all over the place,
They go into my mystery pack.
I know for a fact I dropped some good stuff in there on purpose because I was too lazy to put it in the collection.
I've also traded for 3-5 seeds of something rare and a seed went flying.When I looked for it I found 3 or 4 seeds on the floor.All had to go in the mystery bag...

As far as 7 pot variations,there are a ton out there.
LOTS.
I get most of my seeds from trades these days.

I've already baught most of the seeds the U.S. venders sell.

For anyone interested,Peppermania has just updated the site.
Beth has a superhot deal that I don't think will last long-she'll run out of seeds for it I think.

Tomato growers has pretty much the same as last year,got the cataloge Sat.

Redwood city seeds has their usual collection and a pretty ok price for Bhut seeds.Larger packs of seeds than most.

Tradewinds I don't think has updated since end of last season.Nice selection of sweets and hot stuff.

I've already got 2-3 inch sprouts under lights and 100-150(maybe more) plants outside.Some still with pods and buds.

Did over 400 varieties last year.
Not again this year.
Only a couple hundred (ya right,seems I say that every year) including the Manzanos and Rocotos out there now(with buds and pods).

No such thing as too many hot peppers.

Good thing I have Villarta so close by or I'd have nothing to trade you with.

Now when those Red Rocoto seeds from Peru start putting out those giant pods we won't know how to act.2 kilo pods...
That'll just be the usual ones,not the bigger ones that the plants only grow a couple of.

Hey, Chili lovers!
Right now, I'm over-wintering two Thai chilis, a Hungarian hot wax, and a pepperoncini. Sometime around the middle of February, I'll be starting poblano, tobasco, bhut jolokia, chocolate habaÃ±ero, and black pearl seeds...if the black pearl seed ever arrives, that is....

I still need to create a planting diagram for the garden.

Chris, I can't believe how far 'behind the times' I am when it comes to new strains and variants. I remember how excited I was when the Trinidad Scorpion and Mustard Habanero were 'new technology'. I've buried my head in my beloved bonnets and I look up and it's old-school. They still taste darn good any way you cut them.

Yeah Groovy1, the last two years have created a true whirlwind of new stuff I never imagined existed. it's pretty amazing really considering all the years that went by with so little compared to these rarities.

Do they all taste better than Scotch Bonnets? NO in my opinion. Put the super hots in front of me and a plate of TFM Scotch Bonnets and I'll take the latter anytime.

Low tech here. Just picked some Cayennes from my kitchen window for tonights lentil soup. Very low on Jalapenos so those are in the garden for certain. Low on Red Savina peppers and need to find similar. Serrenos seems to really produce for me so a plant or two of those. Pretty cold up here in Michigan so a short grow season outdoors. Indoor cayenne has been a lifeline.

Anything else that looks interesting at planting time. Lots of veggies and herbs but that is the list for peppers so far.

I sowwed some of my seeds last weekend (saturday Dec 26) in a Park Seeds Bio Dome. Today, new years eve, I noticed I have 2 Bhut's that are ready to pop up, I can see they are curled over, ready to stand up. I am amazed that this system has germinated seeds in less than a week!

I will post pics when they are standing. I tried to get a pic, but they are hard to see, since they are just about to break the surface. I am going to plant more probably mid next week, along with my tomatoes.

I promised myself at the end of last season that I was going to limit myself to 20 varieties max next season. HereÂs my 2010 "hot and not" pepper list after aggressive pruningÂ I guess I lied to myself.
I've already got the extra long season types, Jolokias etc., started. The majority will be started mid February.
Gotta work on my vegetable garden list next.

btw, responding to the original post, the Holland Hot is a fantastic pepper - my favorite all-around pepper, in fact. Exceedingly difficult to find seeds, it was available last year at tradewindsfruit but not this year. If you like asian foods, cayenne type peppers, etc., you are going to absolutely love the Holland Reds.

Well, this will be my first year with a garden again since 2006, so I'm excited.

I finally gave up on the old pepper seeds I was giving a chance to germinate. I didn't have high hopes for them, but I tried. The youngest of the lot did that thing where they sort of halfway germinate and then stop and die. It's a shame because I had some interesting ones, including some from John Fielder, and it looks like he isn't around anymore. I got them before I found out I'd have to be moving into an apartment for a while.

I tried not to get too many new pepper seeds this year just in case I managed to get the old ones back to life, but looks like that's not happening.

Anyway... starting afresh with some new seeds from 2009, none of which I've grown before, I'm going to plant:

Crunch Sweet Orange
Meek and Mild Poblano
Fish
De Arbol

Starting small, just one variety per "niche": one thick walled sweet pepper, one thin walled chile for powder, one medium-hot thick walled pepper for pickling/nachos/salsa etc., and one small very hot pepper for hot powder/hot sauce/Asian dishes. That should cover most of my culinary bases, pepper-wise.

At least, that's the idea. These are all new ones to me. I'm growing CSO instead of a bell pepper, and I use bell peppers a lot. I hope M&M isn't TOO mild, but I got it in a trade so I'll give it a chance and try using it like anchos/poblanos (mostly to make up the bulk of my chili powder, and the occassional rellenos or enchilada sauce). Sadly, I had ancho and pasilla seeds among the ones that didn't make it. Those I'm more familiar with.

Fish seems to most closely resemble a jalapeno or serrano, so I hope it subs well for those, especially since I still haven't been able to track down any of those "traditional fish recipes" it was used in, so I don't know what else to do with it. Again, I did have jalapeno seeds, but they didn't make it either.

The pepper I'm most familiar with here is De Arbol, since I live in an area with a lot of Hispanics. Never grown it, but it's in all the grocery stores. I may even have some dried ones in my cupboard, or maybe they're cayenne, they're really similar and I can't remember. Maybe de arbol is milder? Anyway, the old cayenne and Thai dragon seeds didn't make it either, *sigh*, so de arbol will have to fill that void.

Thankfully, my old tomato seeds still have life in them! Hooray for indestructible tomato seeds!

So yeah, pretty puny list, but I'm pretty much starting over this year and need to rebuild my collection.

all I have to say is "oh my goodness"!!! I read the lists above and couldn't help but think where I would put the rest of the veggies I am planting if I had that many peppers?

In the interest of trying to maintain some standard in pepper variety names, your listed Pretty in Purple is "truly" named Purple Passion.

I screwed up naming on a number of seed packets that were distributed before I could correct them. They were not sent by me but they were sent out through a trusted generous 3rd party.

hey everyone, I'm a newbie, to growing, and these forums.
I've always been a fan of peppers, bells, jalepeno, habanero, etc..so I've decided to grow some this year, along with other vegs, but my list is quite basic, no exotics, and definitely no Bhut Jolokia! id be afraid to touch them bare handed haha

@crunchyuncle - Start the pepper seeds soon and don't overwater them. Other than that, they're really pretty straight forward to grow.

KOREAN: Maraca, Interchanga, Winner, Long Green.
JALAPENO: Purple, Jaloro, Maxi-Jala, Grande, Triunfo, Jalafuego, El Jefe, Ixtapa, Mucho Nacho, Pequis.
HOT: Red Savina, Naga/Bhut Jolokia, Pequin.
OTHER: Hot Portugal, Santa Fe Grande, Cascabella.

Each year I delete Jalapenos that were mediocre and add new varities. The Purple and Jaloro add color when pickling the Jals.

Wow. There must be some crazy huge gardens in this group. I've been doing a few hot peppers in some barrel planters and some pots I have and am this year expanding to a couple of 4' square raised beds (doing square foot garden in these)in addition to the old barrels and pots.

Doing fish pepper, jalapeno, lemon drop, chocolate hab, and tobago peppers.

Smokemaster and cmpman, between you two I'll never get ahead of you to have any new seeds to trade with you lol. I am working on planting every kind I have, need to replenish stock after last year's lousy crop. Anyway hope everyone has a great pepper summer. I really envy that year long growing season. Jackie

this year i plan on growing outdoor for the very first time.
right now i have 9 plants starting in rockwool cubes. 4 early jalapenos for my indoor hydro garden and 5 bhut jolokia for my outdoor. i will be starting all the rest of the seeds in about two weeks which will include 4 calfornia wonder, 4 cayenne, 4 tabasco and 4 scotch bonnet. im going to put them all in 3gal grow bags filled with pro-mix bx. i havent decided which nutrients/fertlizer yet but im leaning towards foxfarm grow big veg and tiger bloom.

Vikingkirkin, your list looks very similar to mine, well except for the Serrano and Cayenne, which are probably too hot for my family. I looked up that Pusztagold, and it looks very similar to the Giant Szegedi, both of which Gourmet Seed Int'l. carries.

I read with amazement that a fellow gardener is growing 150 varieties. That would be a pepper farm.

I will have probably about 10 varieties of sweets and hots all together.
The hot ones I am planting mostly as ornamental except for habs and jalaps to make hot sauce. Then I have sweets to eats raw, in salad, saute, grill and pickle. I have a ton of chili from last year, all dried and cured, all winter long in a shack,
that will last me for crushed pepper for years. I tried to give away as much as I could to friends, neighbors and strangers.lol
I have started some seeds inside and in cold frame. I will direct sow more later. We have a long season. everything will catch up.
