rain barrels - during freezing weather
Comments (3)Well you could add sugar... that would be good for your plants and prevent a freeze. However is a freeze going to be hard enough to do some damage? I could see it damaging what ever you had connecting your site-glass to the barrel but an open air barrel should be fine in a freeze....See MoreRain Diverter for Rain Barrel
Comments (8)I'm with you, Chris ... don't want to spend money where I don't need to ... I'd rather *divert* it to the stuff I really need/want. However, I don't know if letting the rain barrel just overflow is a good idea; maybe it depends on where one lives. We've extended our downspouts out a bit from the house to avoid water problems. It isn't uncommon here to get heavy downpours on frozen earth (sometimes with a nice layer of snow), so if the water is discharged close to the house, naturally it goes where the earth is most pourous, i.e., right next to the foundation. (Glad to see I'm not the only one with household projects hanging ... seems that houses, like gardens, are never finished.)...See MoreFreezing temps the next few days
Comments (4)Wowwwwwww, Dallas is going to take a hit. We are supposed to stay above freezing. I hope!!!! SF better mulch the lower trunks and lights. I am going to get out the brug emergency plan and revise. Too many big plants for the old one. We might get brug cozy here, it will be reruns of Jungle Jim. Good luck, Jim...See MoreFreezing temps!
Comments (10)I too have been thinking of the possible loss of lilac and peony buds/blooms this season, as well as viburnums. I have some new varieties of all 3 that are budded this season for the first time. As far as the peonies, I plan to cover those that have buds with 5 gallon buckets, weighted down with a cement slab. I may try wrapping a few of the lilac buds (in cloth) individually. A lot of damage is caused by frost being on the plant and then it being hit by the sun, so that will keep the frost off the buds anyway. I may try some small plastic tarps over some of the new short lilacs or viburnums. It may be for naught, but it would be hard to just 'do nothing' and give up all hope of getting to see and enjoy the flowers this season. It is predicted to be 29 here tonight. I think I will gather a bouquet today, that I can enjoy them at least briefly inside in case all the other buds perish. I have some recently opened lilacs and viburnums, that smell so heavenly. Sue...See Moreannpat
