Mushrooms indicate that you have fungi in the soil, whether that is the right fungi depends on many things, but the presence of mushrooms is no real cause for concern.
The single best thing you can do is amend your soil with organic matter and the Soil Food Web will straighten itself out for you, you need do litle more than that.

I didn't explain my first post very well. Basically I want to know if I can use mushrooms as a fertilizer? Will it put good fungi back in the soil?

Mushrooms themselves are not a fertilizer. They are the fruiting bodies of various fungi - many beneficial, some not. They just indicate decaying matter in the soil. I would not worry or bother about transplanting them from one area of the garden to another. They do that quite efficiently on their own through the dispersal of spores. If you add more traditional organic matter (compost, leaves, clippings, etc) to your soils regularly, you will encourage sufficient quantities of the good guys who in turn will keep the bad guys under control.

Mushrooms are the flower part of a fungus and "usually" an indicator of a soil that is rich in organic matter. Mushrooms themselves are not fertilzer... and actually if you try to move the mushrooms alone and don't have the right organic material in the soil, they won't reproduce.

If you are looking to improve your soil, instead of moving mushrooms, just add organic matter.

What about this then. I read if I grow leeks in pots and when mature shake the soil and trim the roots then re-pot the leeks. The soil and roots are loaded with Mycorrhizal and can be used on other plants in garden.

No. Mycorrhizae are a relationship between a jillion different kinds of fungi and plant roots. Leeks do not 'grow' these fungi. The leek experiment was done simply to show the benefits of mycorrhizae (in a controlled setting), but those fungal organisms had to be inoculated into the containers first. Get it? You know....some pots of leeks grown with the inoculant and some without, etc.

They (the fungi) are ubiquitous and common place. As the others have said, if you give these beneficial fungi something to feed on, they will come. Organic matter is what they feed on.

You can purchase mychorrizal inoculant, you know. But you'll probably do more good if you just keep amending your soil with a variety of organic components.

My personal opinion is that people spend far too much time worrying about soil organisms. The earth is a microbeÂs planet and we multi-celled organisms are basically insignificant in the scheme of things. One cubic inch of soil can contain over a billion organisms. Even the human body has 10 times more bacterial cells than human.

Soil organisms have evolved to fill very specific niches. If a particular population has the right temperature, the right moisture, the right air, the right pH, and the right food they will grow like wild fire. As soon as any one of those environmental factors becomes limited they will slow up and eventually stop. The population does not necessarily die out; they just are not doing anything. When conditions once again become favorable they will resume their activities.

A good example is that when a soil is tilled there is more oxygen available and organism go hog wild and eat up organic matter at an accelerated rate. This is how tillage reduces soil organic matter. Stop tilling and organic matter will once again begin to accumulate because the soil environment is not as good for the organic matter eaters.

Adding organisms is generally a waste of time. Because whatever you add has to compete with established critters that have evolved to fill every niche in that soils environment and will out compete new arrivals. Another way to look at it is that if the organism you are interested in is suited to your soil, it will already be there.

Your tillage practices, crop rotations, soil amendments, basically everything you do will influence your soil microbe populations. If you feel a need to Âhelp the little fellows out I would suggest sticking to practices that benefit the beneficialÂs and inhibit the undesirables. Rotate, minimize tillage, add organic matter, maintain pH, and minimize fallow periods.

Where do the organic garden business get the mycorrhizal that they sell?

They isolate a culture and grow and purify them in reactors, and usually mix a few different kinds in a package. You can get innoculant that will help specific plants- like clovers, beans, other legumes, but that doesn't mean that a package of myc's will have the right species to help everything.
