I know you could get all three of those custom root from Vintage.
I want a rose called Bernard Palissy. It's an extravagant looking HP that is named for a ceramic artist from the 14th century that I admire. I saw it in a print. I think it is probably extinct.

The rose I would like to have that I can not find is Fakir's Delight. It is not in commerce and I suspect very few people have it to take a cutting from. I have contacted several nurseries and they are on the look out for me but they do not have it.

I had climbing Oklahoma 15 years ago at another residence and I bet it is still there. The next time I am in the area I will see if it is there and will see if I can get some cuttings for you. For that matter I wouldn't mind having it again.

I am also on the hunt for Anna Oliver (not Bermuda).

It is too bad that the Forum exchange is such a ghost town. Is there another web location where folks want to exchange cuttings?

wellrounded, you aren't missing much with Fakir's Delight, if its growth in my yard is typical. The flowers are pretty, but the plant is diminishing year by year. It's a tiny little stub now. Just not a vigorous grower for me.

Fakir's Delight still looked very healthy when I last saw it in the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden.

Since it is a Ralph Moore rose, it is quite possible that it needs an environment where summers are hot, and winters are cold enough for dormancy.

FWIW, Greybird, Vettin -- I have a young Lady Roberts here, (Coastal Ventura Co., Southern CA) and I am most impressed with the plant. (You know, it's a color sport of Anna Olivier.) The old references mention her resistance to powdery mildew, and she certainly lives up to that. Even in this abnormally cool/foggy/dank year, she shines.
I am really, REALLY impressed with this rose.

Jeri, Thanks for always being able to bring a rose to my attention that I have never heard of! Fakir's Delight gets very tall and lanky in my garden. THORNY.But,it sets hips.

I am looking for Elmira, Mrs Biuso's Rose, Pink Moss (Ralph Moore) Florinda Norman Thompson is a rose I looked for all over the world, I was calling Ireland, you name it. Too many roses I am looking for to even think of at the moment!

I don't usually look for difficult to find roses but I want a Radiance because it was the healthiest HT in a field of sick roses in the Sangerhausen rosarium. It's not sold in Europe, unaccountably.

I would like to have the hybrid perpetual Scipion Cochet (not the tea of that name). Ashdown used to list it as in their collection, but they never offered it.

Thanks for your input regarding Fakir's Delight. What you describe fits with my experience with one of its parents, Out of Yesteryear, when I grew it. I was hoping that Fakir's Delight would be more hardy. If Jeri is right then maybe our hot Summers and cold Winters would suit it well.

There are so many, the number of fine roses that have disappeared from commerce or become extinct is heartbreaking.

Reine des Violettes is the purple sport of the red Pius IX. I should dearly love to have a thornless red which is the equal to RdV, but what has become of it? Extremely rare, or utterly extinct?

I'm sure that there are 20 or 30 others I've searched for in vain, but it's too depressing a topic for me to remember the others.

Rinaldo, I bought Mme Scipion Cochet from Roses Unlimited a year ago, thinking it was the tea because that's how it was listed on their website. It's first bloom told me something different. It's a bold "Pepto Bismol" pink. It took me a while to figure it out, but I believe I have the HP. I contacted RU, and Pat said she never really noticed but thought she had the tea. Anyway, you might try contacting RU to see if they still have MSC and if she's still blooming bright pink.

P.S. I still have her in a pot, thinking I wouldn't be keeping her, imagining her to be a blackspot magnet, but she has been pretty healthy. She'll be going in the ground soon, and I'm pretty excited about her. She grows kind of wiry with her canes going out and around like an early HT I have rather than straight and tall like Baronne Prevost (my only other HP). She definitely does not grow or look like a tea.

I'm lucky, I can finally quit whining as English Elegance will be winding it's way here next month... I know, I know, it's only an Austin, but now that it's out of patent, I get to have it again.

For me it is Weeks roses that I want, but can't get in Europe - Distant Drums and Ebb Tide. There also is some Danish breeder with a trade mark "Roses Forever" and a number of them named after cities - the only chance of me getting some of them is stealth cuttings in a public park, which I am rather reluctant to do... /0\

Wellrounded, I am a lurker that lives in Central Ohio, and I have Fakir's Delight.I got it several years ago from The Uncommon Rose which does not exist anymore. I do not know howto send cuttings through the mail, If this rose isn't patented anymore you would be welcome to have cuttings.Someone will have to give me pointers.

Two roses I'd like to have that I can't find are:

1. Isabelle Nabonnand - it seems it's only sold in Europe and I'm not going to risk international shipping.

2. Sweet Passion - I saw it on help me find and contacted the breeder. There is only one plant that he knows of in existance and it's in someone else's garden. It doesn't look likely that I'll be getting that one any time soon.

Of course there are so many roses that I CAN get that I just don't have room for that it's hard to hold on to those I can't possible find.

Mme Scipion Cochet... I'm confused! So there is a tea and a HP?
What color are either of them? There are bright pink photos of her as an HP, and also pale pink. Which is right? or does she change color? (do HPs do that??)

Mme Scipion Cochet appears to be available at Angel Gardens, and is described as a cherry pink Hybrid Perpetual.

I am completely unfamiliar with this nursery, but saw it listed on the Pittsburgh rose society's webpage.

berndoodle, the double Cinnamon Rose is a weed in my garden, a pretty weed. My husband just moved a piece of it to a better position where it will grow to a nice shrub instead of messy underbrush. I wish I could send you some!

elemire, Ebb Tide can be had from the Danish mail order rose nursery Rosenposten. This is probably the most popular mail order nursery in the whole of Scandinavia. Perhaps Knud Pedersen stocks the other roses on your wish list?

I, too, have seen some uncertainty around whether RdV was a sport or a seedling. With roses that old, I expect some confusion regarding lineage. I considered the possibility that RdV might have been parented by Empress Josephine, a gallica hybrid (x francofurtana? x cinnomomea? x damascena? x pendulina?) of unclear ancestry. In most ways it fits, and several decades after its original introduction, it was sometimes known as Pius IX. However, I know of no concrete reason to believe that remontancy genes are lurking in that rose, so it's probably all wishful thinking on my part.

To add to the confusion, Hildebrand introduced what is variously described as an HP or HT named Pie IX in 1905, but that's decades too late for it to be a parent of RdV.

Vintage's "Pie IX" is something I have a hard time with. Maybe it's a reversion, but very few sports are. Most are just random mutations, or shifts in relationships between different cell lines within a rose that's genetically mosaic (like Portlands or HPs that appear to have thorny and thornless cell lines living together). My Duchesse de Rohan put out a damascenely thorny sport a month or so back, but is it a reversion that will teach us about the murky ancestry of DdR, or just a meaningless genetic shift towards something undesirable? No answer can be more than speculation.

So, for the time being, I feel no recourse but to accept Elko County Rose Garden's assertion that "Pie IX is no longer available." If, one day, I cross Empress Josephine with a remontant rose and get lots of remontant offspring, I may eat my words.

Hey, this discussion jogged my memory about another rose that's now out of commerce, unless one is willing to drive to New Hampshire to pick it up: the once-common Betty Bland. I hope that some retailer out there will pick up the gauntlet.

Two that come to mind at the moment are the small Bourbon, 'Reverend H. d'Ombrain', and the HT 'Enghien'. Both are available in Europe; perhaps one or both will eventually be offered here.

Like Mendocino Rose, I'd love to find a rose that's probably extinct -- namely, the Tea-Noisette 'Madame Chauvry'.

Thanks so much for you offer. I don't believe that Fakir's Delight is patented and I am certain that it is not in commerce. I would gladly make a contribution to the endowment honoring Ralph Moore at Texas A & M and I think would be a fair way to honor its breeder. I have not mailed clippings before but wouldn't wrapping the cuttings in wet paper towels and putting them in a ziplock baggie work? If anyone has better advice it would be appreciated. I'm a lucky girl because I don't really have anything I want badly since I received confirmation that I would receive Cl. Lady Hillingdon and La France. My previous wishes for Sophie's Perpetual and Belinda's Dream have also been satisfied. There may be other roses that would be perfect for my hot climate but at this time I'm not aware of them.

Marianne, I think the Double Cinnamon Rose grows as a feral rose in the northeastern USA. It's been reported in both Michigan and New Hampshire. There is always the possibility that it won't like the California climate, but I would like to try it nonetheless. Some day a rosarian from the NE will take pity on me and send me a sucker.

there are a couple of Buck roses which are difficult to get in the UK and I am keen on a setigera hybrid, Tolstoi which involves shipping from Europe. There are also a whole bunch of burnet roses from eastern Europe and Scandinavia I would drool over. Would also REALLY like a hulthemia hybrid, Nigel Hawthorne ( i have a new hulthemia ordered this year, Eyes for You which I am most looking forward to).

A Tea rose that is grown in a public rose garden in Lyons, France that I forget the name of, and all Tea roses that have yet to find their way to the United States.

berndoodle, I'd grow every wild rose in the world if I had the space. Have you contacted Forestfarm.com about the wild roses you'd like? I noticed they sell several wild rose species that are not commonly sold in North America including
R.davrica, R. dumalis, R.maximowicziona, and c. a dozen other rose species and if any nursery were apt to add the roses you seek to their inventory, I have a hunch it could be forestfarm.

Thanks, but Forest Farm is dead to me. They've sent me too many mislabeled species roses. I have a new objective for species roses: they should be true to type and, ideally, seed grown so that if we buy two plants, they won't be clones. I'm sick of species selections grown as clones.

With unrelated seedlings, if we carefully hybridize the two plants, we can actually produce seedlings showing a bit of the diversity of the species. I've love to have a garden full of species that aren't clones. OP species seedlings are always a crapshoot, and OP seedlings of a solitary diploid species rose are virtually assured to be hybrids because so many diploid are self-incompatible.

I want the Lens hybrid musks that smell of damask. Basically I want anything that smells of damask that will prosper in North Central Florida. I am even at this point considering growing Mr. Lincoln and Chrysler Imperial on R. fortuniana even though I dislike the idea of a hybrid tea just because I know that they will grow. My parents grew them.

The things I want aren't in Australia, like RADsweet/Alaska, Applejack, Goldbusch, Scarlet Moss, Crested Damask.

Having to attempt to recreate the wheel with breeding and sweet briars are tricky :/
