can i really not plant roses near a birch??

I am taking down a diseased purple sand cherry tree that shares a bed with knock out roses and a couple of old fashioned ones (I forget the name-its a tea rose of sorts).

I am new to rose gardening, and plan on putting more roses in this bed-either more knock outs (I am sure some of you die hard rose growers are wincing at me!!).

I have purchased a river birch to replace the tree. The shade won't be an issue, as the bed is large and the placement of the tree still allows for full sun, but I am reading on the trees forumthat the birch roots will be too shallow and moisture sucking for the roses.

Can I really not pu them anywhere near each other?? If i can put them close, how much of a buffer should there be???? This news is a total bummer b/c this bed is front and center of my yard, and a huge bay window looks out into it. I would love to see a beautiful birch and roses share space!!!
