Building soil

I did a search and quickly got over whelmed. Hope y'all don't mind me asking straight out. I'm expanding my garden this spring and the area that I'm expanding to is very sandy. I did grow some tomatoes there last summer and they were ok, but not quite there.

So I'm building the soil. Last year I used straw as a mulch and added grass clippings on top of that. In the late fall I turned all the straw and grass in, pretty much emptied out my compost pile in the area, turned all that in. Is that good enough? I also have some alfalfa, kelp, green sand and such that I can add to the soil in the spring if I need to.

Also, those tomatoes seemed more disease prone than my other plants. Does sandy soil have more spores or is it just lacking the neutriants required by the plants?

Thanks a bunch,

Bill
