What's your take on this new product for roses? Jaz rose spray
Comments (21)If it will protect my rose's from looking like crap in 125F heat I am willing to try it. I don't get to enjoy my rose's in the summer in the Arizona desert my growing season is when most of you are buired under the snow. I dread summers but have to stay her until hubby retires. I am willing to try a product that claim's it will stop the stress my rose's are under in Jul, Aug & Sept. I will not build a cover in my front yard that I have to take down in the winter and apply and pay for a building permit with my city hall. A product I can spray would be easier and less expensive. If I lived in Zones 5,6,7 & 8 I would poo poo this product too but when one struggles with 125F in the hot Az. heat you try anything to stop the roses from being under so much stress. I have tried tons of organic products to help with summer stress to no avail. I am always on the look out for products that are somewhat sold at a reasonable price( I would only need the 16oz size). If you lived here and put up with the ugly leaves, the proliferated blooms you would be looking for new products to stop that too, and they get plenty of water and mulch, I do not feed them in the summer because of burn. I think I will try it, unless someone here has a better idea then building a structure in my front yard. Carrie...See MoreIt is the time again - your rose orders for 2011?
Comments (47)I was also looking for SUMMER SONG last year. I was surprised that it was not in the Austin catalogue given its release date in the UK and was only available in North America through Pickering and Palantine. Pickering and Palantine had both sold out early. I tried to ordred this rose from Pickering on the first day they were taking orders and was told that they could not sell it to those in the US. I called the Austin headquarters in Tyler, TX and was told that this rose does NOT perform well in the US and that they had made the business decision NOT to introduce it here. I found this very odd and disppointing. I am aware that a few decades ago, they almost discarded some of the earlier Austin varieties (Tamora comes to mind) because they did not perform well in the UK and perhaps other European trial locations. Fortunately, they were planted at the Huntington Library gardens in southern CA, where they performed very well and these varieties are now available to us to grow. I was able to obtain a SUMMER SONG plant from someone in the midwest who had ordered it from one of the Canadian suppliers. It is now planted in my garden and it is already starting to show signs of growth. I am glad to hear that it is doing well for you, Beth. I am very much looking forward to seeing how it does well in central CA....See More2011 - the NEW 'You know you're in trouble when...' list
Comments (15)All in unison... "Hi, Julie!" "The coffee is over there... by the plate of stale cookies. Welcome to our 12 step program!" ;-) Denial is not just a river in Egypt... it's the state most of us are in after about our 2nd or 3rd season of ordering and collecting Hippeastrum bulbs. It's an addiction, an obsession, and we quickly find ourselves at a disadvantage, our potted hybrid specimens vying for enough light and space, and we often resort to growing and blooming them in group sequences, forcing dormancy on a selected number while another number of bulbs comes into bloom. We might actually designate a portion of our refrigerators to bulbs only, or invest in a second unit we keep out in the garage, clearly labeled with signage of its only contents. Or, we find ourselves investing in artificial lighting, shelving units, or heated greenhouse setups. And many of us secretly wish we could pick up and move far enough south to take advantage of gardening zones, and the ability to grow our bulbs directly in the gardens! We must ask ourselves... how many Red Lions do we really need? How many Minervas or Star of Hollands can we possibly justify buying? Are we running more of a bulb rescue than a hobby growing experience? Once we begin pollination and seed collection and sprouting, we know we've crossed a threshold from which there is no return! If we branch out into the collection of any and all amaryllids, we are surely lost! And yet, there are surely other habits or addictions that are much worse, and we should count ourselves lucky we have embarked upon something of a tame, albeit rather expensive nature! When we find ourselves living in the midst of a bulb jungle, we know we are addicted... when we find ourselves torn between buying groceries and buying bulbs, we know we are addicted... and when we go out of our way for anything related to bulbs or the growing of bulbs, we know we are addicted. You'll excuse me, now... I'm in the middle of researching species lilies and a few other bulbed plants for garden additions next year. :-) "My name is Jodi, and I've been a bulb addict for longer than I can remember..."...See MoreWhat is Blooming in Your Garden - June 2011 - Photos Part 1
Comments (47)It looks like HF Young, but there are a bunch of clematis that have similar color and bloom time that it could be, including Fujimusume, Silmakivi, Lasurstern, Zara, Cezanne, and Diana's Delight. There are also some with similar color that bloom a bit later, including Prince Charles....See Morekentstar
