What roses scents take your breath away ?
Comments (49)hi, Monarda, Mine came from Pickering which no longer sells it, but it is available on the Hortico site. RU may still carry it, I don't know. It behaves like a climber with long canes. Mine does not have the blind shoots that others have complained about on helpmefind. It is vigorous and thorny. The older canes don't seem to develop the stiffness of say, New Dawn, but it is only about three years now, and it's been moved once when I realized it was going to need more room than its previous spot had. Blooms develop at the end of canes or laterals, if canes are moved horizontally. It develops a lot of bud breaks along bent canes. The blooms are beautiful and fragrant. It is not a small rose as it is about 7 feet tall and still growing. I am going to prune the laterals back a lot after the first flush and see what happens. It is very disease resistant here. I think it would be best grown as a climber with the canes grown laterally. I had no idea what this rose would develop as here. I thought it might be a tall stiff hybrid tea, but it is not that at all. It is a climbing rose. How large it is actually going to be I am not sure. It is not in the best spot now and will probably have to be moved again so it can spread out more than it can now....See MorePortland Rose Garden visit
Comments (6)Chrysler Imperial has a wonderful fragrance (at least to me). I have bought many Queen Elizabeths through the years, and also do not care for the color. I also do not care for the growing style. It grows so high, then I am told by those who love it, that you must cut it way back for it to rebloom well. I just saw Granada this past year, and thought it was beautiful. I could not find it, but bought two Rainbow Sorbet that I thought were similar. My husband just loves Voodoo. We do love Distant Drums, but it is an unusual color. I put Honey Dijon beside Hot Cocoa, and it looked ok, but I do not really care for it. You are fortunate to live near or in Portland where you can visit those gardens. Sammy...See MoreOh, no no, roses! We are NOT having any rust in my garden.
Comments (19)It's helpful to know I'm in good company! I've never seen anything like this rust outbreak in my garden. And nothing will move a rose out of my garden faster than Cheeto leaves! My RdR is mature, maybe close to 15 years in my garden. It's one of the first roses I planted and has always been super clean, but now it's super icky. I hope I managed to strip all the fungus. At least rust is a helpful shade of neon orange. Hard to miss! I even found some speckles on Tradescant and The Prince as well as Tamora! The weirdest discovery is what I DIDN'T find: rust on Abraham Darby. He rusted earlier (as always), and I stripped the infected leaves as the fungus presented itself. But now, smack in the middle of the big epidemic, AD only has his usual defoliating blackspot. Really?! Locals drive around with bumper stickers that say "Keep Portland Weird." My garden is sure doing its part. Carol...See MoreOh! Those handsome Frenchmen...
Comments (15)These are all achingly beautiful! Jackie, Eugene is magnificent. He is on my to buy list as I think he is Hardy in my zone. It's good to hear he's vigorous also. What is the beautiful white rose you have growing behind him? Of these, I only had one. Unfortunately, that IS past tense as it was never vigorous even as a 2-gallon from ARE, and keeping him in cold wet soil over the winter in a pot did her in. I've learned from that mistake so if ever I get another cutting I think she'll make it. These pictures are all I have. When she had a bloom I took pictures with different roses to make sure he would look good in the spot I had allotted for him. What a shame he died because I thought he looked really great with these colors. However this is when I decided that I really needed to move Dark dDesire because she is not the correct color for this bed as you can see when I compare the two. Click to see full picture! Dark Desire and FD/:Barcelona New Dawn or Awakening with FD/ Barcelona: Summer Romance with FD/Barcelona: They look so beautiful together. :-( I posted on the cuttings form that if anyone has a Barcelona cutting to spare, I'd be eternally grateful....See More- 16 years ago
