Oh, that is abysmal! I've had rust, but this is a whole other category compared to what I've seen on a few of my roses. I understand you've had lots of rain. I know you generally have lots of rain, but is this more than usual? I can just imagine the yuck factor!

Thankfully, I have NEVER had the misfortune to experience rust MY climate. I hope it goes away soon for you. My worst scourge is black spot then a touch of mildew from time to time.

It's a rusty year here, esp. the red roses that are susceptible. I view them as potential sources of specimens for the fungus lab that features basidiomycetes...

The rose that's been hit the worst for me is Niphetos. I hit it with the hose yesterday, and it let loose a giant poof of gold glitter. I'm beginning to see why it has a bad reputation.

Oh , no, Carol !!! I cannot imagine you and many others went through all day getting rid of rust. I have the same rose too but so far so good. So , what do I need to do if I ever get rust? Strip the leaves and cut stems or water with hose ? I have no clue! Is there anyway to prevevt rust in first place ?

Yesterday, I have to pulled a sucker if my Abraham Darby. I followed instructions and watch videos to make sure it is a sucker and to do it properly. It was hard not to put pics up for options and advise but I did it, yaeh

How long have you had yours? Does it bloom well for you despite the issues?

I cannot abide rust.

Gross! I got rust on my Minette last year in May and completely panicked. I had never seen it out here before. I managed to put it down with some wonderful organic orchard spray by Bonide. Hope it goes away quickly!!!

Yuck! I'm worried that we are going to start seeing more of this in the PNW with climate change.

It's helpful to know I'm in good company! I've never seen anything like this rust outbreak in my garden. And nothing will move a rose out of my garden faster than Cheeto leaves!

My RdR is mature, maybe close to 15 years in my garden. It's one of the first roses I planted and has always been super clean, but now it's super icky. I hope I managed to strip all the fungus. At least rust is a helpful shade of neon orange. Hard to miss!

I even found some speckles on Tradescant and The Prince as well as Tamora! The weirdest discovery is what I DIDN'T find: rust on Abraham Darby. He rusted earlier (as always), and I stripped the infected leaves as the fungus presented itself. But now, smack in the middle of the big epidemic, AD only has his usual defoliating blackspot. Really?!

Locals drive around with bumper stickers that say "Keep Portland Weird." My garden is sure doing its part. Carol

I just wanted to post an update in case I put anyone off growing Rose de Rescht. Most of the rust was undercarriage rust, kind of like my car in MN. Ha, ha! After days of plucking fungus, this is what RdR's upper story looks like today. Carol

How wonderful, Carol! That must have been quite a chore with such a large rose but I hope you've gotten the upper hand. In the garden, I have learned, if it's not one thing it's another, and I'm not talking about leaves morphing into dollar bills.

Thank you, Ingrid. You are so right! The only time we can sit back and relax with our roses these days is after putting in a season's worth of labor and much hose dragging. And by the time we've done all that, it's a record breaking hot autumn and we must enjoy the blooms inside our homes in the air conditioning! :-). Carol

Your Rose de Reacht is such a big thing! Mine is smaller, much smaller. Hopefully it will put some size on this year I love the blooms, but haven’t gotten many yet.

Well said, Kristine. I've never seen disease run so rampant through my beds, but at least we're all in good company this year in the PNW.

I have faith that your RdR will grow big and happy, Karen. Mine is fully grown at 15 years, and I actually have to thin it out and remove suckers plus prune it regularly to encourage remontancy. It was smallish for the first few years and then wow! Carol

In Sacramento, our prolonged cool spring has led to prolonged powdery mildew, too. It usually clears up when temps hit 90 degrees, which hasn't happened yet (hallelujah). We've had some rust - we remove the leaves and put down fresh mulch and some fertilizer to promote leaf regrowth and usually don't see it again till fall. Very little blackspot, which is usual for our area. Overall, I will take the milder temps not only because we people like it but it's been a lovely extended bloom and the bearded iris have been fantastic!

I'm with you and the cool temps, Anita! I think our PNW diseases this spring are the fallout from a milder than usual winter mixed with wet. I prefer extra winter snow. This spring has also been warmer with a record breaking 90 degrees the other day. Give me cool, even if it means some mildew. I'm thrilled you're having a wonderful prolonged rose and iris season. One of the loveliest and most fragrant combos ever invented! Carol
