So, Who's got a sale going on??

In case my WalMart specials don't make it, I will be looking to plant some roses soon. What rose dealers are having a sale now that you all trust? I'm poor. Need a sale.

You planting roses in the ground? You may want to wait until next Spring in your zone to start new roses. Being in IL I suppose you get really cold winter winds, ect.

Heirloom roses has quart sized 1 year old own root roses for sale. They are at regular price, but shipping is free which is a big plus. I ordered a Pretty Jessica and Sharifa Asma and it came out to $38 total, but I havn't received them yet, so I can't really comment on them.

High Country Roses has specials on about 5 roses. Easy Going and Gertrude Jekyl quart sized own root roses are on sale. I purchased Evelyn and Winchester Cathedral from High Country and they were very large quart sized roses...easily over a foot tall and budded up...Win Cathedral is almost ready to open up already.

Hey CJ, if it helps, we haven't had any smoke here since late last week. Prior to that there was a continuous "fog" (beyond annoying). Hopefully the smoke and closed road conditions have improved, especially after all that rain yesterday. Paul had been up in Daytona and down to Melbourne (95)several times last week and didn't run into closed roads or hazardous roads due to smoke, even when there was a lot of smoke here (NE. of Orlando). I haven't seen the news, but maybe once out of the panhandle, it won't be an issue any longer. I hate that I'm not going to get to meet anyone, especially since I'm 99% sure next year is out.

Hi, Phyl! I actually ordered America and Pennylane, both climbers, but poor roses, they're the ones who will be bummed because they will be experiments and may die as a result...I actually wanted Royal Sunset to arrive first instead of Pennylane because I know for sure that it'd be planted in the ground... and it would definitely! match colorwise; that way I could leave at least one in the ground (the ideal)... but RU was sold out of RS. America and Pennylane I really need to see the exact colors to coordinate properly... They are both supposed to be very fragrant climbers... I'm a bit shy about America, because one of our forumers gave really good advice about his own personal experience/problems with America but I went with the online overall research that America is indeed hardy to zone 4 and I'm in borderline zone 5/zone 6. Again I really appreciated his honest opinions and didn't want to give anyone the impression that I didn't give a hoot about their opinion... I just love the color of America and can live with it being a shrub if worst comes to worst... America by the way looks fantastic! and very full big! Pennylane is huuuuge! but is too leggy and I've got itchy pruning fingers, LOL! I don't think I have the self-control to leave it alone... But all-in-all, I am kicking myself, Phyl... I really shouldn't have gotten my "baby climbers" because they ended up so big! (I love how healthy RU's roses are and I also love that they seem to be a no spray garden-type of nursery with lovely roses) I thought my babies would be only be 1'2! but they are actually ready to be planted straight! into the ground but MY SOIL AND GROUND PLOT ISN'T READY YET! SHAME ON ME!!! And to undertake any landscaping in the scorching heat of Kansas, uuuuugh! I'm not that dedicated! Right now my climbers are in very big pots... Anyway, you've got a beautiful selection going! I too can't wait to hear how your roses are going... So all of yours came with blooms???? wowwwwww! which ones have really good fragrance? any favorites so far?

I asked Marietta that same question a few weeks back. They have loads of different daylilies and are a reputible supplier that takes credit cards. Anywho, their answer was that in fall (date???) they take an inventory and then with the results of that inventory they determine what they can offer for sale (if anything). Not being in the"inner circle" on daylilies, I've often wondered if a Hybridizer offered his own introductions for alot less then their orginal price after only a brief time, was it because the daylily increased alot or because it wasn't up to snuff. I imagine it's a little of each.

Yes, totally agree that Newhart was the best TV finale period. But it really only works well if you are familiar with both Newhart shows. MASH was memorable as well, think I saw that in reruns. Friends was good. Was disappointed in Seinfeld ending. Stuck with the Gilmore Girls but the first ending of the series was eh. The ending of the more recent 4 part update was better. Sadly with most of the more recent tv I tend to tune out prior to the last season or if I am still watching the show is cancelled without a true finale.

Ashdown Roses has for every 3 roses you buy the 4th is half price plus Cladwell Pink is on sale.

Euro Desert Roses is also having a sale.

Jim, I think they'll be OK if I don't wait 'til Autumn cold, they should have a pretty good root system by winter.

Thanks everyone, I'll check all those sites.

Anyone else have recommendations?

Unless you know what you are doing, wait for spring. That's my recommendation. Yes, you can order them now, but does it really save any money if they don't make it?

Before you do anything else, check out Pickering's list. That's the baseline for whether or not you are even saving money.

I've planted roses this late and even later and have not lost a plant yet. Even the David Austin bands I purchased from Heirloom at their season end sale last year made it through the winter intact (I mounded them up with loose garden soil). If you stick with roses hardy for your zone I don't see a problem planting this late. Just take care of them, water them, prepare the soil, give them a little winter protection if necessary.

Most everyone has a sale this time of year. I just got an email from Vintage saying that if you combine their "unloved" roses sale with their regular buy 8, get 2 free, then the roses cost $6.75. That's a deal!

Heirloom's free shipping deal that is right now is also their lowest price of the year -- so if you want their stuff, then now is the time.

I too have planted roses in August and had them do fine. They were tiny band from uncommon rose and they are still with me ( 3 years old now)
