When do fall sales start and who has the best sale?

First of all, let me apologize for not answering your posts recently. We have had our great niece for quite a while while her mother recovered from surgery. I think I am too old to keep up with a 7-year-old. I did have a little time before I fell into bed exhausted to look at some of your pictures. Thanks for the pleasure they brought each day.

I am trying to decide whether to order the daylilies I want this fall or wait until spring. I know Maryott's is having their special promotion. Does Floyd Cove Nursery (Stamiles) every have a sale and if so, when? They have several I really want but I could order more if they were on sale. Any other really good sales anyone know about?

Browns Ferry Gardens has a sale going right now, and Bell Daylily Gardens will be running a sale in August too.

I bought almost all of my plants last fall rather than in the spring, and was very happy I did so. Got to see a lot more blooms, and I don't think it was as hard on the plants to bloom "first year" for me. I don't think I will ever order in the spring agian. I am in a mild winter climate though, so my advice along those lines may be poor for your zone.

I know that Patrons does a special sale this time of year, but you have to be on their mailing list to get the flyer, and it is mail in order only. Lots of good deals though!

This was my order from Lazy S'S (received in April). Excellent plants. Big healthy. I ordered plants that could not be found locally for less. I ordered from Bluestone a few times and had some plants that were the wrong color...but, due to the size of the plants, it was a year before I knew they were wrong. They sent me new plants a year later...but, those were also the wrong color...the salesperson on the phone decided to go out to the greenhouse and personally gather the plants herself as she was embarrassed by all the mixups..those were the right color. They told me to keep all the plants and I gave the wrong colors to friends. I would order from Bluestone again if they had something that I couldn't find locally. Everything on their website that I want is also available locally for larger plants and similar prices.

I agree with Brent. Frost is so variable in the MAG area (at least here in the DC outskirts) and winter temperatures set in so late, that while my cannas and sages might be zapped in late October or mid-November, I usually have reblooming irises on my Thanksgiving table and two years in a row I've been out in shorts on New Years' day planting bulbs (in 70 degree weather; I'm no masochist!) Since it takes so long for the ground to freeze in the DC area at least, I find that most fall-planted things have no trouble achieving enough root growth to spurt ahead in Spring -- with the exception of mediterranean plants that can't deal with the wetness; they rot out from the crown. By the way, I'm writing this from San Diego, visiting my Mom; we're going to a couple area nurseries tomorrow to see what goodies we can find for both our gardens. But I've already snagged a gallon Princess Plant and a greggeii sage at Lowes for $3 each -- oh, those California gardens! Lynn

Cash for clunkers is scheduled for April 2010. And it only includes some appliance types, DW, Refrig, W/D. No ovens/ranges. I assume appliance companies will lower prices to entice you to their brand (or dealers, to their store) when that happens. Too little, too late for me. LG has a fantastic rebate through 12/24. Check this link http://www.universal-akb.com/rebates.html They don't have them all, but a lot are there. I checked Kitchenaid website, they show rebates listed, but their links don't work - on my computer anyway. Also, http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=rebate.rebate_locator for Energy Star rebates. Might be too late for you, but Best Buy has a great deal - 20% off all major appliances if you buy 4 of them at the same time. Plus 2 years at 0% interest. Happy hunting!

Estate Sale, Tag Sale, Indoor Yard Sale?

Here an estate sale is considered an indoor with outdoor items perhaps. Almost everything in the house is for sale and tagged. Usually by someone in the estate sale business. Things are clean and as I said tagged. Usually large items will have a sign saying they will take bids on them - if applicable. Prices are firm until the last day and usually on that morning things are 25% off and later in the day maybe after 11 they go half price. on a big sale the place iscleared out before the 1/2 price goes into effect and then people are let back in. The prices range from the perceived value of the item. I've seen both ends of the spectrum. People line up well before the usual 8 am opening to get in. Most of our sales are run by two popular Estate sale agents and their crews. A tag sale might be in the empty house or just items already priced If you have a lot of stuff it might be well to contact an agent in your community. It might be worth it just to avoid the hassles and headaches and they are usually responsible for everything. One of the most disgusting "estate sales" I went to was run by the family and they had their bed ridden aged mother in the living room watching people go thru her stuff while the family sat around drinking coffee.

I asked Marietta that same question a few weeks back. They have loads of different daylilies and are a reputible supplier that takes credit cards. Anywho, their answer was that in fall (date???) they take an inventory and then with the results of that inventory they determine what they can offer for sale (if anything). Not being in the"inner circle" on daylilies, I've often wondered if a Hybridizer offered his own introductions for alot less then their orginal price after only a brief time, was it because the daylily increased alot or because it wasn't up to snuff. I imagine it's a little of each.

Homestead Farms has a page or two of ones for sale. I just received my order today and they are HUGE! TONS of roots! They are literally 3 to 4 times the size I got from a different company last month, although they were a few dollars more, but definitely got my money's worth! Very nice people to deal with too. I was able to reach them by phone to order, and then to add on to my order twice. They were very pleasant and I will be ordering from them again next year. (also got 2 nice looking hostas from them and I'm looking to buy a peony from them too). HTH

I ordered from Maryott's during the Ming Yee special and they sent three bonus plants with the one plant I ordered! I ordered Alien Contact, and got Ming Yee, Cameo Luster, and Dilemma. The roots were huge! I received large double fans and they took off when I planted them.

I will definitely order from them again this fall.
