Mooreâs Striped Rugosa

I got this rose from Uncommon rose this early spring. It is growing nicely and blooms a lot for me, but there is zero fragrance so far. Everywhere I read about this rose it says moderate clove scent. But there is honestly nothing. I asked other people to smell it, so it is not just my nose.

If you grow this rose or saw it somewhere did you notice any scent? I am really dissapointed, because I am a big fan of rugosa's fragrance and was buyng this rose definitely hoping to enjoy its scent. I am going to wait of course, I hope this rose needs to mature to develope fragrance, but still I would expect at list some hint of scent. And there is absolutely nothing, zero.

I'll have to check mine out, but I thought I had been able to smell it. I got mine directly at Ralph Moore's place the weekend of his 100th birthday. I really like it, definitely a striped rose for any striped rose collection! Not terribly rugose, more like a Hybrid Perpetual that keeps blooming the way it should.

Olga, I have it, but I'll have to check for scent if I can find a blooms before the JB's. I honestly don't remember if it had a scent. I really like the pretty reddish tint to the new leaves though. I would keep it just for that.

I grow 50 Rugosas(25 different) in my garden and I find the beauty of them is that I don't have to worry about disease or poor growth. I am not organic but I don't spray and I only use compost around the base of the Rugosas. I would try not to view them as modern ( even if some have just been introduced) as this will destroy the beauty of trouble free plants. To me the only thing I have to worry about is their suckering and some do it very well. Here is my list of Rugosas which do okay in the PNW on sandy soil and gale force winds off the sea. I can't give you a solid answer about your climate and size, but it definitely has the deeply veined rugosa leaves. I just got mine this summer. Kind of an experiment to see if it can handle my climate. I have to say that the blooms of this first year plant haven't held up to summer heat very well, but maybe that will improve with maturity. They last longer than the quick-blowing Scentimental, but they aren't nearly as full. Still, they have a pleasing, sweet clove-like scent to my nose. As far as size, the nursery I got mine from said it should grow about 4 feet, but very bushy and kind of rambling. So far, mine has grown out 3 main canes about 3 feet, with plenty of leaves. The plant doesn't seem phased by the heat, just the blooms. Already with the oppressive heat of August behind us, the blooms here are looking better.

I have it growing in my mother's no spray Zone 7b garden. Total black spot disaster. As for the vigor, mom's is about 3 feet tall by 4 feet wide. Widely spaced open canes with moderate to heavy thorns and no leaves. Pretty flowers, good repeat and nice (but not great) fragrance. Frankly, I'm not too happy with it and the retched rose is currently sitting on death row waiting for its date with La Madame de Shovel. Patrick

Kate, sorry to make you change your plans...LOL. I had a feeling once you saw how pretty this rose is you would want it (again). Terry, Mine does rebloom off and on all summer. It is also quite healthy and I haven't had any disease issues. Lois, Mine is an ownroot but has never suckered. It is 4 years old and no sign of suckering. Celeste

I'm growing it own root in my mother's no spray, coastal, zone 7b Virginia garden. Pretty flowers and excellent repeat bloom but I haven't been able to detect any fragrance. Please keep in mind that I only planted it this spring. I'm hoping as it matures the fragrance will develop. Of course, the main reason I got it was because of the rumored good disease resistance. Mom needed a striped rose to tie in with Madame Joseph Schwartz and Cramoisi Superieur that are planted in the same bed. So far it has had absolutely no black spot.

Hi Olga, mine has no fragrance. I wanted it so bad but to me it's not all that. I prefer the Delbard stripes for performance and color.

Mine is in it's second year and I can't detect any fragrance either. I am growing it very close Darlow's Engima so perhaps the fragrance from it is over powering my Striped Rugosa. My plant is still quite small and hasn't flowered a lot. I'm hoping that it will develop some fragrance as it matures but I can live with it even if it doesn't as the flowers are beautiful and it's been trouble free for me.

This is an interesting thread. I remember seeing the striped rugosa for a couple of years before it was introduced and there was definitely a fragrance in the production plant there at Sequoia. Of course, it could well be that the scent is only available to some of us. I often notice that certain scents--particularly the clove one--tends to be elusive. My friend Kim can detect scent where I cannot and vice versa--although to a much lesser degree. JimD

Thank you everybody for your responces. I am usually good at detecting clove scent. I guess I need just to wait couple years and then check the fragrance again :)
