Fragrant Cloud and Sheer Magic colors blend?

I am trying to make a pleasing color combo in my rose garden. I have a Fragrant Cloud, a pretty coral color, that I planted bare root in too much shade this spring. It needs moved, and I am thinking about putting it next to a Sheer Magic, which is kind of apricot, I think, but it hasn't bloomed yet, so I've not really seen it. What do you think of this color combo? What rose would compliment Sheer Magic well if not Fragrant Cloud?

I think apricot or soft corals would be pretty with Fragrant Cloud, and of course white would work. I have mine near IMperatrice Farrah which is white with scarlet edges, and Katherine Zeimet (white), and some other oranges like Gingersnap (totally different orange) and Kanegem.

Are you the N. Carolinian near Lenoir? If so I live just down the road from you, and two other GW'ers live nearby also, Carla and Budeye (Dickie).

Seil, I'm so sorry to hear! Try just one more time? ;) Though a blend, I'd like to try 'Sedona' next season. I saw it at a local nursery that is one of Weeks' customers. I loved its intense fruity, pear-like scent. The blooms were an eye-catching blend of orange and yellow with the guard petal red splashes. They looked vigorous with good basals. Gosh. Here I am always telling myself how much I prefer crimsons and purples and soft accent shades, but I turn around and SEE what I actually have, and it's a whole lot of vivid, flame colours and yellows: Lady Emma Hamilton, Maria Stern, Helen Hayes, Sunsprite, Tropicana, Fragrant Cloud, (yes, even never-sheds-nasty-old-petals): Sunny Knockout, and finally, a Westerland! I seem to be a sucker for our more or less modern day Pernetiana shaded roses! I love trying different types. If they make it, great! If not, I can get something better! Mine looks good with non-rose plants, sort of off by itself with various types of foliage around it. For example the bronzy Phormiums--looks great with those! You might try just brown/bronzy foliage nearby. The brown/burgundy Pennesetum setaceum rubrum grass--great combo with FC flowers. It's just an unusual color--not pure clear orange, not red, kind of dusky or greyed orange-red, and the duskiness is what is tricky. That's why it looks good with 'Tuscan Sun', because TS has that dusky/greyed quality as well. 'Disneyland' and 'Easy Does It' are in the same color range, but completely without the dusky/greyed quality, instead with more pure, clear tones, so they don't look right with FC even though they are in the same color range. When all else fails, just close your eyes and inhale FC's fragrance. Yummy good!

I don't know if it's tall enough for you, or if it's a color you'll care for (it tends to be something one either loves or loathes with little in between), but Fragrant Cloud is definitely an orange rose. I don't know if it would be "tall" for you, but most likely it will be of at least medium height. I have an own root in zone 6 that I never protect (just the wood chip mulch the landscapers put down in the spring) & the only time I had trouble with it was in the freaky winter we had a few years ago where the temps. consistently remained in the 50's & 60's until a sudden brutal cold snap in early Feb. That killed it to the ground but since it was own root it's come back. (A normal winter here has temps. in Dec. in the low 40's or 30's during the day (except during a cold snap), and in the upper 20's or low 30's during the day in Jan. (except during a cold snap, where the high can be 10 for most of a week).) Tropicana is another famous orange rose. I don't have personal experience with it, but I know it has a reputation for growing tall when it's happy. As long as it was own root (so it came back true if it died to the roots) I wouldn't be reluctant to grow Tropicana if I had my own yard and enough sun to make it worthwhile. Both are strongly fragrant orange roses.

I agree with Curlydoc. Fragrant Cloud has that touch of clove in it but even more so it smells like orange rind intensity. And I cook rose petal jam with Fragrant Cloud and boy does it punch a kicker (tastes like ultra sweet orange-cinnamon)! However! Fragrant Cloud only carries about 2' away (you can smell it at that distance) whereas you take one Lincoln and you can smell that one Lincoln blossom 8'-15' away. Only when Lincoln blooms do the bees start coming to my garden. When visiting other rose gardens, I enjoyed Tiffany, New Zealand, Frederick Mistral, but theirs have a very pretty smell. Honey-sweetness I call it, from the "honey-family". New Zealand and Frederick Mistral have more of a perfume powdery smell though, more duskier whereas Tiffany is more appley. Lincoln is by far the strongest smelling rose (per one bloom) that I have ever smelled. And I still love his fragrance the best out of all roses I have encountered. It is the ultimate Chanel No. 5 I call it. No other matches it. It is a true perfume-distilled and one can't describe it because it is the ultimate rose smell, very rich deep and velvety. But granted I only test it against the common Austins. I have never smelled any truly rare, Antique roses. However I suspect that some OGRs may smell like my Penny Lane. My Penny Lane rose when it is past maturity looks like an OGR and its blooms last a super-long time-It has a beautiful sweet Gardenia scent-I've never smelled a Gardenia-smelling rose ever! so perhaps OGRs smell like this? I think it's a real shame that OGR people don't visit our regular Rose forum. It could really open our eyes to more fragrances! Austin roses are sometimes myrrh-clovish. But more commonly they are fresh and light in aroma- more fruity-light, very pleasing, but no not heavy with intense intonations. I found one Agnes Rugosa that smelled as lovely and light as any! Austin! A beautiful rose-- I just loved Agnes and it taught me to start thinking about rugosas. Unlike HoovB I always thought Double Delight bright and sweet and lovely-natural, not chemical. If you want a chemical-smelling rose, HoovB, try my Aromatherapy rose! J&P's so-called most fragrant rose. It maintains its cut fragrance for a super long time, but man! it does smell like a manufactured perfume. It has strong fragrance, but it is also heavy like artificial fruit, and!!! strangely it never carries or wafts in the breeze. At the garden, Double Delight did not waft in the breeze either. So again, a strongly fragranced rose may not waft in the breeze. All strongly fragranced roses are not created equal. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised that no one has mentioned Zephirine Drouhin....

Sheer Magic's color is difficult to describe, but I would not call it apricot. It's an odd blended coral that I'm not particularly fond of. Also, SM is wildly phototropic (changes color rapidly in the sun). Under my conditions, the rather nice color variation doesn't last much past the open bud stage. The color change seems to work in reverse if SM is cut & brought indoors. The blooms have a LONG vase life, but the color becomes a kind of washed-out pink as the darker coral slowly fades. When it's color is at its best, SM closely resembles 'Brigadoon'.

It's been a while since I've seen Fragrant Cloud & am having difficulty remembering the precise color, but I'm inclined to say that it's similar to Sheer Magic's color AFTER the sun has done its number.

Fragrant Cloud is a pretty coral, but unusual. My first Sheer Magic from J&P this spring died, so, now I have a new one that's growing, but hasn't bloomed yet, so I can't comment on its color much.

And, I am the Nancy in Lenoir, NC. Since I'm still new to roses and quite infatuated by them, I love to see other people's roses to get ideas and share the beauty of mature roses.

Nancy, You've consoled me without knowing it. My Sheer Magic from J&P this spring has not completely croaked but looks like it has a bad case of something. It did bloom beautifully, but looks like it has the bird flu - I'm hopeful that it is the plant and not me that is at fault.

My Fragrant Cloud is a deeper coral, almost red. I put it next to Mr. Lincoln, thinking it would be a nice contrast, but sometimes they almost blend. So I'm thinking of moving FC. I think having it near a contrasting color will make it stand out more.

Feel free to email me if you like. I've enjoyed visiting Carla and Dickie's gardens very much, and getting to know them a bit. Also, there's a rose society in Hickory with about 25 or 30 members, and another one around Lincolnton. The president of that one is Vernon Rickard, who owns Almost Heaven Roses.
My garden is not much to see right now but in fall I hope there'll be a few things blooming.

I have stopped worrying about roses clashing. Fragrant Cloud sits beside my patio where I can enjoy her in the evening. As the sun sets, FC comes out and steals the show every night.
