thinking of replacing Abe Darby

I have Abraham Darby in a prominent location in the center of the front garden. I love the blooms but the foliage (or lack thereof) is causing me to consider moving him to the back garden and plant something with better disease resistance in that spot.

Can you give me some suggestions for a replacement? I'm thinking something that would get large like Abe, BS resitant, hopefully fragrant, and perhaps apricot colored to fit in with the others planted there. Is that too much to ask?

Oh yes, the new rose would be planted with Gruss An Aachen, Marchesa Boccella, Perle d'Or, a Sharifa Asma and a baby Cream Abundance from Heirloom.

If you like Austins, See if Emanuel is still available.
It is better-foliaged, and a more manageable size -- blooms are of the same character, but smaller, and in large clusters, on a plant of graceful, arching habit.

I finally gave up and dug Abe out of my garden even though I LOVE his flowers. The plant itself always looked terrible, with diseased leaves and the flowers didn't age well when Blooming. William Morris is a hulking great bush always covered in pretty roses. It does seem to keep its leaves well attached and they are much healthier then Abe. Neither makes a good cut flower, they turn greyinsh and wilt within a day. I moved William Morris to the back of the garden where he puts on quite a show from a distance.

Just wanted to add that I got rid of Abe due to rust, too, here near Sacramento. I have a Lillian Austin that I wish I could find an in-ground spot for. It is currently in a big pot and happy enough. No suggestions for the colors you are looking for, though. I am assuming you are wanting an Austin rose? If you wanted yellow, I would give a big recommendation for Symphony. It is one of my best roses. Just Joey does wonderful for me, too. Frilly and beautiful. Kathy

Lavender Lace, Jude smells better than Abe. Its a different scent..fruitier and stronger. Very yummy lol. Jude is nice here but its hot much of the year and the blooms blow quickly. When its cooler and they stay more globular its so pretty. It repeats really well and is a large rose. I still love Abe more because he's one of my favorites.

How about Crown Princess Margareta? It's a beauty when in bloom with it's peachy-apricot-golden tones. It's supposed to have good disease-resistance too. Maybe it can do well in Atlanta. Lady Emma Hamilton might also be a good consideration.

Papi Delbard has wonderful large flowers similar to AD's. The plant has good resistance here so far (2nd year). It is a bit more climberish, but most short climbers can be pruned into good large shrubs.

Also I love Clair Matin as a shrub. It is a tremendous bloomer, and has an extraordinarily good plant habit and foliage.
