Help me choose a tree and advice on planting!

Hi Everyone!

I am looking at planting 2 trees in my backyard for privacy and shade. I am just north of Toronto, Ontario. My backyard is about 30 feet wide and faces west. The soil is hard, crappy clay and after the incredibly hot summer it is so dry that all grass in the backyard is dead and the ground has dry cracks all over it. I want to plant the trees along the back of my yard which stays the most moist even during dry times because our backyard is dug out and our neighbour's is not. Sometimes during the spring and a hard rain this means it can almost have a river running alongside the back. I *love* maples and would like to plant 2, do you think they would do well in my backyard? If not what other species? I would also like to plant them soon, is it too hot now to plant trees? Should I wait until the fall? I will be planting them myself in the aformentioned hard as heck soil...what tools should I use/rent? An auger type of machine? Thanks for any advice!

Cheryl
