Is it easier to grow something on the cusp of your zone....

in the ground or in a pot that can be overwintered in the garage?

For example, I am thinking about Comtesse du Cayla, which Carol suggested. I am loopy over this rose but it is a zone ahead of me, I think. Would it be more winter hardy in the ground or overwintered in a container that can be brought inside (the garage, that is?) I have never attempted to do that before.
