Chilopsis linearis, or something else, for zone 9?

We need to start considering a replacement tree/trees for a full sun, well-drained, low water location. Currently we have three birch. I don't know what kind, they were here when we moved in, but they're probably over 25 years old and they are heading downhill. We are on a corner lot, and the trees are on the very front corner ( to minimize side-swiping possibly ).

DH wants to plant another type of shade tree since they shade the driveway; I want something much more appropriate to our dry climate -- especially since we don't have a front lawn and I water minimally. I'd also like something not so tall as the birch.

Would Chilopsis linearis be a suitable replacement? What about Acacia aneura?
