Too young to identify reliably! Oak seedlings commonly have leaves of quite different shapes to adults of the same species. Adult foliage develops slowly over 3-10 years or so.

i would have waited until the leaves fell off .. and then i wouldnt have to worry like you are now ... but i would still sit around all winter wondering if it would bud out in spring ... the tree went stress dormant when you dug it up ... it simply shut down the leaves.. if they actually hadnt all ready done so ... getting ready for Oct ... it will continue to grow roots [a tree dormant above remains active below] ... until very late into fall ... so keep it properly watered.. and mulched.. but dont drown it.. this time of year.. with cool days.. and cold nights.. you dont really need to provide a lot of water.. but you do need to check it.. insert finger ... all my transplants are bare root.. that is irrelevant.. IMHO ... as was .... IMHO.. the tap root .. i would have favored speed of transplant.. over spending excessive time on the tap ... timing could have been a bit better.. after the leaves fell off.. but i suspect your friend wanted it gone.. and you did what you had to do ... dont worry about it.. at worst.. you got some exercise.. and spent some time with a friend ... and you have a pre-dug hole for a new one.. if this one dies.. lol ... ken

Oh Ginny! I feel your pain. We had a bumper crop and a whole new oak forest was growing in our back gardens. I got to the perennial beds really early in the season and raked out and picked out all sprouted acorns, but we still have hundreds in other beds. It's insane! Barb had told me about the pliers and I have used that for a number of years now. (Thank you Barb!) My DH went ahead and weed whacked all the seedlings in the way back. it was a very large area with hundreds of seedlings. We figured he'll just have to keep up on it and we hope it will work. I can't imagine pulling them all by hand. It really was a bumper year. Good luck!!

first ... nut trees have mast year ... when they sorta go crazy making nuts .... so .. hopefully.. this wont happen for another ten years or so ... if thats any consolation ... second ... some level of fall cleanup probably would have reduced this springs problem ... thats not much consolation either i suppose .. lol ... third ... whether or not a tree can releaf.. has a lot to do with how much stored energy there is in the root mass .. so.. when you keep mowing off the leaves.. in the lawn.. they eventually fail ... same would be in the garden ... if you keep interrupting the energy storage .. they will fail ... one would expect a new babe.. still feeding off the nut attached.. to have limited energy ... and fail .. but if they have already put down a good root.. it might be too late ... but do understand.. otherwise healthy trees .. rarely die due to pruning.. no matter how god awful it is ... lol ... i would just ID a small area .. say 5 feet square ... and clean it out.. and just keep repeating until you are done.. even if it takes until fall ... you are hoping for a simple and easy solution ... imo.. there isnt one ... usually.. if you cut just below the soil surface .. and remove the whole trunk .. and leave just the roots .. they will not come back ... but that is hard on your pruners ... and might be soil dependent.. as to whether you can insert you cutters down in inch or so .. ken

I think it's a maple seedling that happens to look like an oak seedling...

That caused me to burst out laughing, because an elderly gentleman who grew an unknown tree in the yard next to the one my daughter was landscaping just called his tree Bob, too.

I have not had that many oaks so tiny, other than white oaks, but I'd also say it does look very like pin oak.

Sure you weren't thinking of Quercus acerifolia, Lou?

ken, it's a seedling of one of the red oak group - but like resin said, it's hard to make a definitive ID with seedlings; their leaves often don't match up with what the mature leaf shape will be.

ahhh.. the old BOB joke .... i kinda expected that answer .. lol ... but i think i will go with joe ...

the older oaks on my property are red and black.. and intermarriages in between ...

its got to go i suppose ... i only have about 8 billion others in the yard ... and i dont have 10 years to find out if i have some unique leaf shape on a mature plant ...

Maybe there are some other large oaks around that might give you a clue as to what it is. I realize squirrels can carry acorns a long ways. But just sayin...
