lilacs of may - I agree w/the "need more greens" opinions above (which is not to say that I disagree w/the "need more water" opinions - I just don't have an opinion about the water thing b/c my bin is in a container & I tend to have too much moisture more often than not). The way you described it - 1 thin green, 1 thick brown of mostly leaves - seems like it would take a real long time to decompose. I've noticed leaves in my bin take a long time, which I didn't expect. But, my bin takes a short time to decompose when I've used mostly garden/kitchen waste, intense greens (such as UCG/dried blood/alfalfa), and some browns such as (leaves/paper towels/napkins/shredded moistened cardboard) - IF I turn it ALOT (again it's in a bin so this might not be as crucial to your formula). Plus, I also find that we each have a preferred "formula" for our individual systems, lifestyles & area of the country. I've added below a link to my list of 201 Compost Ingredients, if you want to brainstorm about more "greens." BTW, we just got our first Starbucks (10 min away) - prior to that the nearest starbucks was 1 hour away & that was just in a bookstore. I am already collecting from a local coffee shop (actually, they were new about 2 yrs ago - pre-local-Starbucks - and I told them about Starbucks' habit of bagging & offering UCG for peoples' gardens & so now they're doing it! yippee!). And, actually, most of the UCG I gather go directly onto soil (under the store-bought pine/other bark/shredded mulch) or onto the grass. We have a 70 stall horse ranch/barn with a very large over one year aged pile of horse manure mixed with cedar shavings. This is great for mulching, fertilizer, or mixing in with soil to enrich your earth. Come any time between 9am-5pm Tuesday through Friday or Saturday and Sunday from 9am - 4pm. Please don't come out Mondays. You are welcome to take as little or as much as you wish. We have a small tractor and are able to fill medium sized pickups for a 20 dollar fee or you can load it your selves and take as much as you want for free. Please feel free to bring your own tractor if you are planning on taking tones. The pictures are showing the outer layers, the older richer material that would be best for fertilizer is just underneath. The best for mulch is the newest non aged lighter colored material. We produce large quantities daily so there is more than enough of each type available. This is the best deal out there, many other horse ranches sell their material, but since we produce such a large quantity there is more than enough for all. Please feel free to come on in at any time that works best for you between the hours above mentioned, no need to call ahead unless you need a fill, then just come find us. free--- mulch to everyone no matter where you live. Hi! to every one I just joined. I live in Mansfield and I called everywere to find free mulch. Mansfield doesn't give any free. Arlington, Fort Worth, Burleson all said you have to be a resident of there city. I found one place in Dallas that gives it for free.
