Sources of free mulches and Compost Near San Diego??
Comments (11)I've been picking up truckloads of this compost for 3 years after laying a 6 inch layer on my sweet corn bed as mulch 3 years ago....one day I moved some of the top layer aside and was blown away at the millions of redworms that had moved up through the bed and began to congrigate in the top layer of this compost as red worms are wont to do. I've experimented with this compost and all I can say is redworms freek out when you give it to them! They will devoure a 3x3 box 5 feet tall filled with this compost in 4 weeks! Leaving about 3 feet of worm castings behind, crazy stuff. I had brandywine tomatoes all year long this year and still have huge tomatoes coming in in the middle of January....See MoreWhere to get free compost/mulch in Orlando?
Comments (8)I know of two. The OC landfill as you mentioned but you have to shovel it yourself. Good for small quantities. I would also recommend Monterey Mushroom in Zelwood. I know some people are down on the compost material they provide but I have had good luck with it. It is not free but very cheap. If you can bowwow a dump trailer I paid $15 dollars for a 7x14 trailer full and they can load a trailer with one scoop of their front end loader. It takes a full season to decompose down but is a good way to add organic material in a short period of time. I used this to jump start my raised beds and now just compost with typical material. I would call first. You can also ask at the guard shack if they have mushrooms and if they have overstock you can get a whole bag full for very cheap. 5949 Sadler Rd, Zellwood, FL 32798 (407) 905-4000...See MoreFree mulch/compost York area??

Comments (4)I had the same thing happen to me last year. Instead of removing the sawdust, I just used a broom and a rake and spread it around the entire yard as best as I could. Then I applied Milorganite. That part of the yard has the richest soil on my entire property. The Milorganite provided a boost of nitrogen to help the initial breakdown. I don't even see wood chips anymore. The nitrogen hogging issue only occurs if you let the wood chips and saw dust under the soil. That is, don't till it. The wood can pull nitrogen from the air to decompose. If it gets buried in the soil, it can only pull it from the soil itself. That's where you run into issues. If the wood chips and sawdust sit on top of the soil... It's actually one of the best things you can do for the soil. They will keep the soil moist and generally provide great food for the soil life to break down....See Moremomofjandj
