Dogwood and redbud are what my thoughts start with.

I consider my dogwoods the classier choice. Not only do they flower but theu get berries and have GREAT fall color.

Redbuds grow faster, probably die sooner, and for some reason them heart shaped leaves make folks smille.

Both species have some cultivars out with different colored leaves if that interests you

Halesias are also a great choice.

Serviceberry!!

I second Serviceberry. And carpenter ants likely showed up after the crab was compromised.

I considered service berry, but I have dogs who like to nibble on fallen branches, aren't service berries poisonous? Otherwise, I'd love them, they are beautiful.

I have been in love with rosebud forest pansies since I was a kid. They always reminded me of aquarium plants. I put one in my front yard and its absolutely thriving! It went from a dormant stick to 10 feet tall and just about as wide in 3 years, They grow like crazy. Tornado, you said they are short lived though, when can I expect this one to expire :-(

Longer than a dog, less long than a house.

If you dont get fifteen years out of one i would think your site isnt ideal. If you get more than forty i would be impressed

I have dogs ranging in age from 8-14yrs with no apparent ill effects from my Serviceberry. And, personally, Serviceberry pie is to die for not from. Ã
