Comments (17)Tomas, thanks again for the kind words, and your advice makes a lot of sense. Yes I will continue to grow the hardier broms in trees, and pot the special ones so I can move them onto our back and/or front verandah if necessary - some into the house if I have to. I will also invest in a lot of frost cloth for my shade house, and landscaped broms, and spray them with a product called 'Envy' which is supposed to work quite well against light frosts. Have you or Sander heard of this or similar product? Apparently it's like a polymer glue, but still allows the broms to breath. The regrowth of that fig is encouraging - thanks :) Sander, I can see now why buses might often go past your house - but a very nice house! I like your windows, and yes I can see the broms through them. What size backyard do you have? Continuing with Tomas' suggestion of using a dark area for protection in winter, have you considered some kind of grow-lights in your garage/workshop? I imagine you have. Any chance of building a glass house in your backyard? Any spare bedrooms - if you kick out any unwanted relatives? One must get their bromeliad priorities right! Maybe you'll just have to move to a bigger place to accommodate your precious ones. Eeny meeny miny mo....... Cheers, Kerry...See MoreWhich way do you think look better for the accent trim
Comments (10)I remember what my realtor told me when we bought our house on the steep hill, 1/2 the people will like it/not care the other 1/2 will not like/will care. It's always interesting that we have such divergent opinions on everything! Go with what YOU personally like and try not to be double minded when you hear the opposite opinions. LOL! :)...See MoreHow many of these do you remember?
Comments (33)Ahhhh yes! Those were the days when kids *were* kids! I remember my kids doing some of the same things, like playing outside until 10 at night, and not worrying about them being kidnapped. Parma, rat fink~I forgot that one, but remember saying it. LOL And my best friend of 50 years who lives back in IL still says supper, as do most small town mid-westerners. And then there were the 'grillers'. Those were the tough guys(and a few girls)who wore the leather jackets, and we would cross the street if they were walking on our side. Moonshadow, yep, lighting bugs, and we would catch them and put them in a jar!! Now if I find a bug in the house, i'll pick it up and put it outside, even an ant. I remember when you couldn't buy pantyhose, and had to wear that god-awful garder belt(no lace, plain elastic)and hose w/no stretch in them....but maybe seams. I wouldn't trade those days for anything!(((()))))...See MoreDr. Laura Schlessinger
Comments (36)"Not all people of very dark pigmentation have African roots. What do you call a light skinned person from Africa?" An Arab. Usually. The entire northern continent of Africa has historically has been inhabited by Arabs. In fact, most living in that region do not identify with a nationality but rather refer to themselves as Arabs. Hence a citizen of Egypt would first say "Arab" before saying "Egyptian". National borders were not put down in Africa until the mid to last part of the 20th century. That being said........Africa has had a lot of settlers to the continent throughout history, and a lot of those countries are inhabited almost entirely from their descendants who never mixed with the indigenous people. *I get so tired of hearing people say "Cleopatra was Black". We were even taught this in grade school. She was an Arab and her lineage was Greek. -------------- "If Dr Laura was fired for what she said, wouldn't that a violation of the 1st and 14th Amendments of the American Constitution? " No. Absolutely not. A lot of people get confused by this. The Constitution prevents the government from censoring the populace. That is what is spelled out. It does not address workplace rules. Nor does it address FCC rules for OTA communications. (Which I don't believe Laura broke.) Besides in some states the law is "at will employment" meaning that an employer can fire a person for any reason or no reason. This probably does not apply to Laura since she most likely either signed an employment contract OR she owns her own show and sells it under contract. Here is a link that might be useful: FCC Ruling...See Moreharborrose_pnw
