I've moved them, using usual practices (wait until dormant being the most important!) You should be ok.

Someone who lives closer to you can give you guidance about best timing. Here I'd do it in Nov but that may be a bit late for your zone.

Julie, I didn't transplant it. Instead, I did a lot of thinning and cutting back. It had a quite airy appearance last year, but had a lot of growth this year so I will be pruning back again. Now to determine when to do it. I know it should be after the first frost and may extend that to later in the fall or early spring.

Didn't transplant because it's planted on a sloped bed which is difficult to work on. I pull my 'little old lady' routine when that happens. I am little. I am old. Works for me.

I dug one up in the Fall that was 12 ft. high, set it next to the hole, and walked away. I was hoping the rootball would dry out and be a lot lighter to move to the compost pile. I'm composting small branches rather than burning them.

It took rooting sitting on tip of the ground and is now thriving in partial shade and very good topsoil. I'd say they are easy to transplant following normal planting procedures.
