wild cherry at allotment: better to fell it?

Hey there,

today I had had a look at an allotment which I could rent. Apart from its poor condition due to years of neglect there is this wild cherry tree (Prunus avium), probably grown from seed, right at the egde of the plot. its about 25 ft/ 8m high, the canopy/ tree top reaches about 18ft/ 6m into the garden and the beast will get bigger. So will the rootsystem.

Now I wonder how bad the roots will munch away at future veggy plots. I know that trees send their roots over amazing lenght if there is fresh compost, fertilizer, water etc to be have, even into raised beds.

So, my first thought was to ask to have it felled when doing the contract/ renting thingy with the authorities.

If they should refuse, perhaps I could have a lawn there with some berry shrubs on the sides.

Or I shouldnt be too greedy/ desperate for a plot and just wait for the next plot to be offered.

What do you think, could it work, even with that big growing tree nearby?

Thanks for your comments or experiences,

cheers, Lin
