GW Get-Together?

All the talk here and on the main Rose forum about shovel pruning has got me thinking. I'll throw this out to see what type of response I get before I make any real plans. How many of us would be interested in a pot luck rose exchange get together this fall? We don't have to limit it to only roses -- I'm sure there are nice perennials or seeds that can be exchanged as well. This could be whatever we want it to be. The sky is literally the limit.

I know I have a couple of roses at least that I would like to pass along to new homes. (Since all of mine are still in pots, this is a really simple prospect.) Think about it and post your interest here, or you can send me an email direct. [c.hilker (at) comcast (dot) net]

I'll offer my place for the location, even if we haven't actually moved in by then. To sweeten the deal, my next door neighbor is a winery. This could really be fun.

Where do you live in Va? I live in Appomattox. Yes, a get together would be wonderful.

Okay, okay! Take pity on me--we didn't get home 'til 1:30 this morning (after a long day of eating, chatting, walking, more eating, more walking, and then a long drive home!). We had an absolutely wonderful time! Seeing a few now-familiar faces as well as some new ones made for a lively and fun gathering. Of course, we missed you Rayna (and Marty!), Celeste, and Jane (it was tough without your planning help my friend!). We so enjoyed chatting and visiting, and yes, all were loathe to end the fun! Tableside, bathroom, staircase, outdoors--nobody wanted to break away from the group! The restaurant (Blue Water Grill in Union Square) could not have been more accomodating. There was no rush as we waited for Cathy to arrive--we sat at the table and got acquainted (or re-acquainted for some!). The food was lovely; light and fresh on a mid-summer afternoon, and we leisurely dined and talked kitchens and more. Once we finally made our way outside (!), there was more chatting and finally Debbie and Al, and then Tracey said their good-byes. Sheila, Cathy, Caroline, John, and I made our way across the street to the Greenmarket, a terrific farmer's market. Sheila soon said her good-byes as well, leaving the quartet to walk the market, and then meander down to SoHo. We left Cathy at 6:45 and hopped on the subway to make a 7:30 dinner reservation at Becco. Caroline and I ogled the bartenders and wait staff, while John patiently indulged our ogling! Food and drinks were sublime (that Lydia Bastianich sure does good food and then some!). All in all, it was a perfect day, one John and I will treasure always--a beautiful summer day spent with some very special new friends! As of now I'm hoping to come, but my MIL is planning a visit that day, so it's still iffy. She's probably more interested in seeing everyone else, so I might be able to do it. I"ll let you know the week before if I am definitely coming. If I don't confirm, I'm probably not. It'll be fun -- thanks for planning this!

Thanks FlseaDog & WritersBlock. FlseaDog...I'm not sure how far Sarasota, Longboat Key, etc. are from us. I'll have to check. My DH doesn't want to drive too far...we did enough driving to get here! WritersBlock...We were in Punta Gorda yesterday but I don't remember Burnt Store Road...we'll check it out. Punta Gorda did look like it was all country clubs! But the beaches are less crowded than in Englewood and they just generally seemed like a nicer beaches overall (bigger/deeper, for one thing). We'll be going back at least one or two more times...I prefer ocean/gulf swimming to a pool! We're also going to check out Venice.

Beagles you are so sweet to offer your place for a get together. At the moment all of those dates work for me. We will have a house warming and a christening to attend out of state - but my brother's new home is still under construction and the baby isn't due until June. I'd love to get to met my fellow SE PA GWers.

Sounds good to me if I can make it. But I would like to know approximately where do you live in Virginia?
I have a lot of perennials, bulbs, Irises beside roses to trade if there are plants I would be interested in (my yard is still overcrowded, so I intend to be careful - but that never works :-(

I'm in Stafford County, just north of Fredericksburg, off Route 17. Right next to the Hartwood Winery.

I also have bulbs and iris to share. I'll probably see if I can root a couple of figs, too.

I live in Asheville, so it would be hard to make it, however I would host such an event at my home as well. It's an emabarrassing beginner's yard. Maybe I could get free advice if not free plants!

I'll know better in a couple of weeks what my schedule will look like for the fall. I'm thinking a Sunday in October . . . we'll get more specific later.

I guess I can start building a collection of stuff to bring too. I may have some more suckers of Shailer's Provence and this other found rose. I can always share cuttings of brugmansia.

Robert has the right idea. If you're planning to come down for the party this fall, now is the time to begin to plan for it. I was just doing the very same thing.

I took cuttings of my figs -- Golden Alma and Celeste.

Mama Hardy Banana (aka, Musa Basjoo) was wheeled to the backyard, where she underwent a successful operation to remove 7, or was it 8, baby bananas. She looks a little rough right now, but I was able to preserve plenty of her roots, so she should be just fine.

Cherries 'n Cream is blooming her butt off out there; the japanese beetles aren't bothering with her for some reason, but she's going to a new home. I think Wild Blue Yonder will be going with her.

I should be able to make it; have rooted rose cuttings, some in pots and want to downsize so can bring some extras. Live in Richmond so not too far away.

I'm thrilled that this is generating some excitement. My favorite things in the whole world are meeting new people and throwing parties. With this gathering, I get to indulge in both. Let's aim for the beginning of October. The exact date will depend on when I can schedule the movers -- I'd like to have them do their thing in mid-September.

Connie---I would love to come and meet all you lovely rosey people------Va. is not too far from Pa. but I will be having another hip replacement in Sept so a trip is out of the question-------

Connie, When you consider dates, try to remember that Ashdown is having the guest speaker from David Austin in October. I don't recall which day, but I want to go to that this year too.
