Flakey Ash Tree

I have an Ash tree that has some kind of flaky stuff under some of the leaves. When I first saw this on my bird bath which is under the tree, I though it was scale from the sparrows that drink and take baths, but then I saw a bunch of it on a lawn mower I had there for a few days. I looked up and finally saw some white flaky stuff under some of the leaves. I was going to pick a leaf and tons of that stuff came down on my head. yuck. What is it and if it's a bug, is it too late to spray?

Finally found the cord to my dig. camera. Here are some photo's. I have 4 other ash trees that don't have this thankfully. I noticed those big legged flying bugs that suck the life out of your tomatoes flying out when I was trying to spray that white stuff off the leaves.

I vote for Fantex Ash. It goes dormant in winter. Not a single problem frost. It puts on slow to moderate growth, but is not invasive. Nice shade and a very beautiful symmetrical tree. Chinese evergreen ash is also nice. Small leaves but beautiful trunk and nice canopy. The drake variety is supposed to be a faster grower. Also goes dormant in winter and no probs with frost. Can't go wrong with either one.

A-B Girl, is there some pest of ash that you are worried about? for example, here in Wisconsin there have been isolated pockets of the serious introduced pest emerald ash borer, making the continued use of this genus quite questionable. But if there is no such issue in your region, why not work with the ash trees? They are good workhorse trees for a number of applications. +oM

As long as no other healthy ashes (Fraxinus species) or fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) on your property or neighboring ones there is no reason NOT to use the wood chips as mulch. In fact, even if those trees were present, it really wouldn't make any difference as sooner or later EAB will get them as well, mulch or no mulch. Wood chips make an excellent mulch and informal surfacing material for walkways. Never a good reason to have them hauled away :-)

Oh, thank you. Now I can go look up how to get rid of it. I always feel like I need to wash my hair after walking under that tree.

Ok, that didn't work. Do you know how I kill them? I still didn't see any on the other trees, but that doesn't mean anything. I found a cluster or 3 leaves that had this on them that had broken off of one of the other trees and was on the ground. Are they going to kill my trees?
