Planting acorn from columnar english oak

I planted 2 columnar english oak trees about 5 years ago and noticed the other day that one of them has produced its first acorn. It's very green right now. I would like to try planting it and want to know how to tell when the acorn is ripe for planting. Do I wait for it to fall onto the ground and hope I beat the squirrel that lives in our neighborhood? About how deep should I plant it - I want to just stick in the ground where I would like it to grow. I did a search on the tree forum and saw a suggestion to build a wire cage around where the acorn is planted to protect it from critters. Any tips to increase my likelihood of success are greatly appreciated. I am in zone 7b, about 30 miles south of Albuquerque NM.
