First impressions-- I don't know what to make of the yellow canes: did that start before transplanting? Pale green all over is usually nitrogen deficiency: did that start before transplanting? Tan leaf areas could be sunburn from disturbed roots.

This is just a thought. Few years back I had trouble with plants that I had mulched like you do, as if the roots were not getting enough air or something. I removed the mulch out to the dripline area instead of it being close to the plant underneath. The health of all the plants improved.

You may have multiple things going on there.

RS, it looked like that before you planted it, right? That's what I'm understanding.

So it looked okay until it bloomed and then declined. Did you feed it after blooming? You all have had a lot of rain, haven't you? Maybe all the water washed all the fertilizer out of the pot and it's reacting to lack of nutrients?

Could it be too wet? In my garden, yellowing leaves mean too much water. Did you use a light soil or was it really heavy?

The leaves are not as tan as the picture appears. I think the picture is misleading.

The plant was purchased in about mid summer last year. I potted it up into a larger container once. I don't really recall what soil I used but last year I did use some Miracle Grow Moisture Control last year, and I really really don't like that stuff - for me. It stayed much too wet.

It bloomed really early this season, I did not fertilize it because I didn't think it looked really healthy to begin with. Maybe that was the wrong decision. Then it declined while still in the pot. It looked pretty much the same way it does now, while it was still in the pot.

When we planted it about 2 weeks ago, I broke up the root ball and also tried to remove the Moisture Control soil as much as I could without damaging the roots.

I have had roses completely grown in the Moisture Control (minis) that looked really really bad and once they put down roots once planted, they looked much better. But I don't know about this one.

Maybe there was a combination of the roots getting some damage and the soil being too wet. It's suprising what wet soil can do. Also I've had problems with Lillian and got rid of mine years ago. It might not be her fault but who knows.

I'm a firm believer, that if something is to be planted into the ground. Purchase a healthy plant at the correct time for the planting time for your zone. Plant that healthy plant into healthy soil.

Don't tell anybody that I have planted in July though...ssshhh...LOL

My mulch theory in my above post: I planted healthy plants, those healthy plants started going funky. Back then our clay soil was much more compacted then it is now. Removed the mulch from around the root zones and did nothing else, plants improved back to normal.

Your case, you planted a already unhealthy plant. Probably has something to do with the soil you potted with. I would make a potting soil change if I were you since things haven't worked out for you in that department.

Hopefully you get things figured out!
Don't fret though, plants are replacable if it should die.

If you lose the root-ball when transplanting in summer, the rose will need either temporary shade or 50% defoliation to prevent moisture stress. The root area needs to be moist at all times but not constantly saturated. I water transplants from pots around 1/2 gallon every other day and the surrounding soil thoroughly once a week.

If it survives and resumes growth, give it some nitrogen immediately, such as 2 TSP Miracid in a gallon. The overall pale green probably reflects a shortage of N rather than overwatering. However, don't fertilize if the rose is not growing, because fertilizer increases moisture stress.

If a person does some or alot of potting up of plants to plant later. What type of potting soil is best for growing a better healthy plant??? Average pot size used for plants such as Redsoxs???

Jim, I am not much of a pot grower. I do know that you can grow a 4 x 3' rose in a 7-gallon pot, although most American growers use 15-gal. Europeans do not.

I'm not a pot grower either, but, may grow some potted roses/flowers next season. These will be left in the pots. I'll have to read up on potted soil and how to over-winter potted roses. I have no outside sheds or garages here. I have a unheated space under our front porch, closed in though with 2 windows.

The crawl space sounds like it might work if there is only slight ventilation.

I will place a temp gauge under there to monitor temps this coming winter to see if it would possibly work. 3/4 of it is underground. Yes, only slight ventilation.

Would you suggest I put an umbrella over her? I have done that before when transplanting in the summer. But it has been cool here recently, for summer, that is.

I guess I'll know by the end of August if there is going to be regrowth....or not.
